Need Help on doing Rear Diff R&P swap...

I'm going to be swapping in a '96 2.5L Outback 4EAT trans & rear diff into my '96 SVX in the coming weeks. Mike (Rufus) will be doing the install and mentioned that he has never swapped R&P gears before.

We were wondering if anyone has performed this swap and if they could give us detailed instructions on how it can be done.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

-Chike

Just use the Legacy diff housing so you don't have to mess with the pinion preloads and stuff. Then hope that the SVX diff (You do know to put the 4.44 ring gear on the SVX diff right?) fit's into the Legacy diff housing, some of the non LSD cases need to be grinded out a little to fit the LSD diffs. Usually if you use the same shims that are on each side it will work OK. If you have the measuring equiptment then you can check the back lash and preload with it but I usually do it by feel (No problems yet) and check the gear pattern, if the gear pattern look good and the diff isn't too hard to spin then you should be good to go. You also might have to change the driveshaft flang, I know the SVX one is bigger than the older Legacys but I don't know if they made them bigger in the newer ones, just touqe that to spec and start doing AWD burn outs.

Thaks Jesse. Question, I remember seeing one member who had pics in their locker of doing the R&P gear swap. Do you remember who that was?

-Chike

P.S. AWD burnouts I shall!

No problem, Chike. As long as you keep the micro-brewed amber stuff flowing, Mike will probably figure it all out on his own, maybe, perhaps.

Good ol' Ron! We may need to have you come over the day of the install to keep the mood jovial and peppy!

Always good to hear from ya!
