this would only affect the mpg calculation on the next tank if it was not overfilled. i just looked at my spreadsheet and i see that my last tank average was 24.676 mpg. my best was 26.590 mpg on 29 december 2003. the worst was 17.963 mpg on 08 november 2003. i've only had one other tank less than 20 mpg since i've owned the claret. my driving is mixed, but mostly highway. it's never been on a road trip, so i look forward to the excellent mileage people report. i think my baby;s just getting broken in at 140k miles!

Hi!

My numbers vary from (metric) 0.80L/10km to 0.87L/10km highway.

Lower number is a "within speed limit" travel from work to home
and the higher number is when I'm in hurry...20-30km/h over the limits and "inspiring" driving...

Wow, someone says...-how can this guy claim theese figures in such a short distance ...??

Well, I have 400km to my work, and another 400 back'ome...

Mixed/Town is another story.... 1.3L/10km .... ouch ....

Coverted to the ancient method "MPG" ... ok...let's see....

Your "gallon" (US) is 3.79 L
and the UK-gallon is 4.55 L

And a "mile" is 1.61 km

Hmmm...that makes 0.80L/10km is 29,425465838509316770186335403727 "MPG" (US) !!
and
0.87L/10km is 27,227011494252873563218390804598 "MPG"

...and...

UK-gallon, 35,546875 to 32,686781609195402298850574712644 "MPG" (does any1 use this?)

What gas "grade" are we talking about here? CA only gets 91, and that is pathetic comparing to what you guys in other states have. That might be one factor that greatly affects milage.

I know in UK, there are even higher octane numbers, at least back in Kazakhstan we had up to 98. (although kazakhstan not nearly close to UK, i am just guessing here) That is some rocket fuel, lol.

Well, here is my quick randown. I go surfing twice or three times a week. That is 100 miles roundtrip with elevation gain of 2000 feet in 20 miles back and forth. So total gain of 4000 feet a trip. Three surfing trips....... that is all i can fit in it, 300 miles + school trips, about 330 - 340 on average. The light comes on when about 15 - 15.5 gallons used up. Do the math... 22 MPG.

Comparing to my dads outback. Same exact scenario. Although I am able to fit almost 4 trips. And from what i calculated he gets 24 - 25 on average. So..... unfortunatelly SVX has to stay home for those days.... or go to my dads work.

sad... sad... I haven't seen a single person on svx at the coast yet....except for me...

the front range of colorado has an octane rating of 91 as well. our regular unleaded is only 85.

In Sweden all gas stations have :

Regular 95 octane , unleaded
Premium 96 and 98 , unleaded

I try to run on 95 mostly, because of the price.

I'll try to convert the prices to Euro/Gallon ....

3.79 L is 1 US-Gallon, 1L 95 costs around 0.9 Euro * 3.79 = 3.41 Euro/Gallon.

1 Euro is 1.25 USD, and that makes 4,26 USD/Gallon for 95 oct.

There are two different systems working here, like metric & non-metric. I THINK one rating is called RON, the other is DIN, but I forgot which is which.

RON DIM.

<<Winter Gas Mileage>> is currently really lousy!!

Actually, I thought I was doing OK, but then it turned COLD!! (It was -22.5 deg. F here last night!) and my mileage has turned to sh1t. Usually I get about 350 mi's on a tank- I had to fill up after only about 250+ mi's last night.

When it's this far below zero, it takes a lot of power just to push the car forward. I really feel sorry for the people that don't have Mobil 1 in their engines and AT's.

Right, because none of us could possibly be right.

I have seen varying mileage from my SVX. I've gotten as low as 12 and as high as 31.4. The lowest happened in lots of city driving in very cold temperatures. The warmest occured on flat highway, sustaining 75mph for hours at a time without slowing or accelerating for anything. I never 'top off' my gas tank. Ever. That's all I need - gas spilling down the side of the car.

But I have also seen wildly different numbers from other owners. I think that it has more to do with what conditions a person drives in, rather than how good their math skills are.

Of course, accuracy of the methods used cold definitely be a factor. I mean, I always reset the trip meter and use that as a gauge, but not everybody does that. And I've been known to forget it rarely, so I'm sure other people have, too.

Still, I wouldn't just flat out say, 'I've never seen these numbers in my car, so the experiences of several other people must be flawed somehow.'

You 'BS detector' is a little hypersensitive.

What? Please explain what you mean by this. Is the dense, cold air offering so much more resistance that cars actually require more power to move at a given speed? Is that what you're implying?

I think mark10t mean that when the cold makes the grease and oil in the motor and transmission line very thick and almost solid (it feels so anyway ) the power to overcome theese factors increases and cosumes fuel....right mark10t ?

I have an example of this.
For some years ago I was working in a remote (and cold) place in the north of Sweden, and this day I was heading for home and the thermometer reading was -37 cels. (-34.6F) To those who not have tried to start a Mercedes diesel in theese tempratures, I could only say -Nothing moves!! , the seats are like wooden chairs, and the shift stick takes so much force to move that it almost bends!

Luckily I had a almost new Optima YellowCap battery and that saved my trip, because no normal battery can crank the engine in that temprature.

Ok, so the engine fired up slowly, but needed help for about 10-15 seconds of the startermotor, but eventually could go by itself on full throttle. I stayed for full throttle for about a minute to reach approx. 2000 rpm, and then i decided to try to reverse out from the parking "pocket", the car moved one feet, and the engine stalled and died ON FULL THROTTLE!!

When I had the reversing manouver behind me, I tried 1:st gear forward, same procedure, stalled engine.
When the car eventually moved forward on 1:st gear and clutch fully released (still on full throttle!) and speed slowly rised I tied to put in the 2:nd gear, when I pressed the clutch pedal the car immidiatly stopped from 5mph to zero in a split second!

So, same procedure again........

I finally made it out from the parking area, and headed for home, some 220km, but when I rolled out from the town I heard a sudden sharp crack and the front window was cracked from side to side! (I guess that the hot air on the inside, and cold on the outside, made it).

I made it home, but I don't know if I ever do that again...!!
The coldest reading on the way home was -43 cels. (-45.4F)

If the car had failed on the way, in the middle of nowhere......
and not so many lunitics besides me were on the road that day, I'd probably had frozen to death.

That is very cold indeed. :][
I take it most people do not drive when it's that cold out?
Things break, even steel suspension parts, watch the pot holes.
