Differential Gears
Hi, a few days ago, while driving my 92', some very unpleasant sound emerge from under the car. Whenever I let up the gas pedaal the noise emerge. It sound like metal pieces grinding, or loose inside the transmission housing. I was told that it might be the differential pinion wearing out, any advice on other possible casue?
Oh, I did experience rapid decelation a few times right when I slow down, sounds just like down-shifting. |

If its the pinion/ring gear wearing, then there should be metal in the gear oil. A couple ways (at least) to test for this.
1) drain the fluid and use any old magnet to check & see if there's metal in it. 2) find a magnet small enough to be inserted in the dip stick hole...maybe one of those magnets on an extend-able shaft, or a small ring shaped one and tie a string to it, or (...you get the idea) and let it down in the differential far enough until it rests on the bottom. Let it sit a minute and pull it out, should find metal. |

Well mine blew the pinion bearing and sounded the same way. When it happend to me there was nothing in the diff housing but the smell of burnt gear oil. Check for the diff oil level, if there is nothing on it chances are thats your problem. When the pinion seal go's bad is throws all the gear oil in to the tranny, you might also notice that the tranny fluid is really nasty looking now too.
Depending on how well the tranny was shifting prior to this, it might be time for a rebuild or 5 speed swap. I'm in the process of changing the gears on my old box right now. Witch remindes me.
