Hubtamer tool usage question!
Hey guys,
Those of you with the OTC hubtamer tool p/n 6490, can you help me out? I'm in the process of removing the rear bearing and a little stuck. I'm puzzled as to why the "forcing screw" 503052 isn't going into p/n 311881 easily. Could I have a bad p/n 311881? The threads on both parts look clean and not galled. It almost feel like the thread on p/n 311881 is slightly tapered. I'd say only about 1/4" of the forcing screw goes before it becomes extremely tight. I used the forcing screw to remove the outer hub with ease so I know the screw is in good shape. Thanks for any help. Ali

Tamer WOES
I bot a HubTamer to do rear, then later, front bearings this year. The numbers you give are correct for removing the bearing from the upright. The 311881 should turn easily! When I got my kit, it was missing one bearing installer (. . 309 I believe). Beav said it's not too uncommon for a part to be missing, so maybe yours is defective! The other smaller nut also fits the forcing screw, but it's not hardened. However, since it's a common size, maybe you can get something (like 2 or 3 of those smaller nuts or a hardened nut) in the same size (3/4 - 16) .
I take it you're in the middle of this still. Hope you can find a replacement or temporary nut(s) to work for you. Wish I could loan you mine! GOOD LUCK! P.S. Be sure to grease the threads.

Thanks for the reply. I used the nut to finish up the work finally. Shame my part wasn't right. I'll contact OTC this week for a replacement. Sad thing is that I had to cut off the lateral link bushings and the long bolt due to the corrosion. Off to the dealer to find two bushings and a long bolt!

Nope, didn't work. Heat, penetrating fluid, heat, pneumatic hammer, heat, cussing, using a BFH, and some more heat, nothing worked. Don't underestimate what seven years of salted roads can do to suspension parts!
The bolt cost $19 from Liberty subaru! Wow!! This is one bolt I wasn't gonna get from Ace hardware, even if it was a grade 8. Later, Ali
