Tranmission Noise
Well this noise has been getting worse for the past year. It sounds similar to metal being shaved or machined. It sounds like sheet metal or something thin. It is an automatic transmission.
It only happens when the engine is braking the svx as when the foot comes off the gas. It does not happen in nuetral and not when acellerating. More recently it has started to show up when driving over bumps at moderate speeds, 40 mph or less. It is louder when down shifting on purpose, moving the selector from D to 3 to 2 to 1. The noise follows the engine speed not the drive shafts. Anybody have this problem before?

Sounds like the drive shaft rubbing??
Check your mounts, you could have a loose one

Had a similar sound on my wife's svx. Turned out to be the exhaust heatshield rubbing on the driveshaft right by the center support.

I hope it's this simple
Had a similar thing happen to me. Check the carrier bearing for the drive shaft. Mine was loose and was fine when tightened. Simple repair.
Don't bother putting in FWD fuse to try to diagnose. Made no difference on mine. Randy ii |

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll check the carrier bearing for the drive shaft. BUT The sound changes with the engine speed not the road speed. It does not make the noise when in neutral.

Well it was the heat shield by the drive shaft.
I got to look at it yesterday and the shield looked close to the drive shaft near the rear of the carrier bearing. I just reached up with both hands and pulled the shield down. This increased the clearance and no problem now. Thank you all for pointing me in the right direction.
