OT - Need help with accel cable of '00 Silverado

My brother has a 2000 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L and auto in it. After 40,000 the accelerator cable seams to have stretched or frayed. It has an inch or so of play and often sticks when depressed causing uncontrolled acceleration.

I searched for recalls and while there were thousands of complaints listed for uncontrolled acceleration, there is no official recall. I planned to replace the cable with a new one and told my brother to go to the dealer and order on for about $20.

He stopped in there today and the parts guy called over the manager. The manager said that they have had so many problems with the cables on these trucks that Chevy won't let them sell them anymore. He said that the way to fix it is through a computer scan of the engine and service for $150.00

Is there any truth to what the dealer said about it being a computer problem in addition to the bad cable? I tested it and I got the cable to stick in the down position with the throttle and gas pedal disconnected.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Doug

Man, that's the worst kind of scamming. Make a ****ty product, then when your customers figure out how to fix it inexpensively (which still involves paying you for the parts), take advantage of them.

In GM's defense, I wonder if people were botching the repair and making problems worse for themselves. It may have become a liability issue for them. Hopefully declining sales of parts that could potentially cause an unsafe situation doesn't become a common practice - because that'd be nearly every part on a car!
