I have an important question

So i am looking to buy first car, and i would like your collective input.
Is an SVX a good idea for a first car, or would a 1993-2001 impreza be a better option? I have limited mechanical knowledge, but i am planning on taking a college level intro to auto class soon. what do you guys think? should i go for the SVX and hope nothing goes totally wrong with it, or should i go with the impreza?

Re: I have an important question

My personal opinion is that the Impreza is a better idea. From my experience owning 3 SVX, you should be quite mechanically inclined or have very deep pockets.
The SVX is a very comfortable fast car. You can be going way, way faster than you should be in a hurry and without noticing it. In the hands of a new inexperienced driver this can lead to big trouble.

Re: I have an important question

According to your other posts, it seems like you have a budget of about $4000. For this price you are hoping to get a well-maintained SVX, without potential problems

In your case, I would suggest getting the Impreza. Parts are more plentiful and available and definitely cheaper, since there are many aftermarket companies producing parts.

Service on the Impreza is more widely available as well. This is important since you have limited mechanical knowledge. Basic maintenance on the Impreza is easily learned and performed.

The SVX may be more exciting as a first car, but peace of mind in a daily driver is priceless.

Don't worry, we'll help you make the best decision.

Thanks for the input guys!
I think I will be going with the Impreza first and put the SVX on the back burner for awhile.

Re: I have an important question

My SVX is my first car, I believe it was a good choice. I have a limited mechanical knowledge about cars but I have friends that are mechanical wizzes. I do sort of regret not buying a car that I wasn't afraid of parking in a high school parking lot, so now I have to buy a beater, oh well, its worth it.

Re: I have an important question

I've had maybe 30 cars so far, from Subarus to Saabs to Porsches and many others in between. Each serve a purpose and will meet either your needs or your wants, and sometimes both if you're lucky.

But if you need a reliable, low-cost, daily driver, get a Honda or a Toyota. If you can put up with a car that is relatively high-maintenance (both cost and psychologically), you might be happy with an SVX.

I've wanted one forever and got a nice one in June, but its taken as much as I paid for it to sort it out. I got another in August as a parts donor. It becomes an addiction...

Likely you'll do better than me, but I'd recommend that you allow something in your budget for repairs and maintenance with an SVX.

Re: I have an important question

The Impreza is a good choice. It will be a great daily driver and you should get lots of miles out of it.
