Alternator??

I just bought brand new battery and battery ends for my car and it still only charges at 11.7 volts when i drive and dies down when i stop. whats the issue? is my alt. taking a ****?

Based upon your information, I would say that your alternator is definitely on its way out. Normal charging voltage should be in the mid-13V range or higher with the engine running. At 11.5V, the alternator ceases to charge the battery.


Is it the original alternator?

Are all of the battery cables, including the ground wires, cleaned and securely tightened?

Do the idiot lights in the dash glow dimly while idling? Is the alternator belt tight?

Mark your pulley and drive it around for a while.The marks should stay aligned.

Lower photo for reference only; the lines could be at any distance from each other indicating that the front and rear parts of the pulley are not securely attached to the rubber separator between the two

Where were you measuring the voltage from? Was the engine at idle? Did the voltage change with RPM? Can you find a place that will check your alternator for free?

If you remove the alternator from the car, Autozone or Advanced Auto will test it for free.

Following the advice of the people on this site that know how to test an alternator will turn out to be more accurate than most of "those people"

If your alternator output is fluxawating, as they sometimes do, charge great and at other times, not charge so good, taking it to get it tested wouldn't necessarily help you at all.

You have pretty much nailed it already as you do not have to increase the rpm to get more than 12 volts if the alternator is working. Your 11.5 is undoubtedly the existing battery voltage.

From past experience, I had my alternator tested off the car and they were fine. But when it was tested in the car it was bad. It was bad connectors!

are you saying a loose or possibly cracked belt will cause the dash lights to glow dimly only while idling?
