Transmission drain plug problems

I was getting ready to do my first "drain and fill" on the transmission and ran into a couple of problems...

I can't seem to fit any of my sockets/ratchets onto the plug because the heat shield on the cat is in the way. Is this right, or am I after the wrong plug?

Also, when I did get a wrench on there it seemed like I was stripping it away rather than loosening it any. The local tranny shop that did the flush years ago probably impact wrenched it on there too tight. Not sure if I can even get it off, and then if I do, I'll probably need a new plug. What size is it?

It's the plug in the big square pan just ahead of the main cat. If she's really not coming, an option is to remove the pan and drain that way. Very messy, but hey, that's how most American vehicles do it! Just remember to replace the gasket.

You may have to use a wrench, I think its a 17mm....... I just did mine a week ago and used a ratchet and socket, the exhaust moves slightly since its hung with rubber spacers. If needed you can tap the wrench with a hammer to get it loose.... and dont forget lefty looset righty tighty lol

Oh yeah id find a 6 point wrench rather than a 12 point since theres much less chance of stripping. (Hexagon shape instead of a star shape)

You should not have that much of a problem with it. Are you sure you have the right plug?

Yeah mine was pretty hard too, I know what he means by it being so close to the exhaust..... often times when you have a stuck plug, its more effective to tap it loose rather than try to muscle it. It wont damage the plug just make sure to use a 6-point socket when you do it. Good luck!
