Common Sense

All you have to do is use a little common sense and review professional dragster times versus weights and HP outputs to know that this was a fake story.

You also have to remember what month that issue is... April. Need I say more? Many magazines are famous for their Aprill Fool's gags. R&T is one of them. You've been fooled, fool!

Clearly this forum is no frequented by long term Road and Track readers. Every April issue they do a spoof road test. In the past, they have done a steam locomotive, several airplanes, including a DC3 and the Goodyear blimp, and many other very unlikely vehicles. I think one year they did a road test of the Cyclops, the car that was featured in a continuing cartoon in the magazine.

Who here remembers their annual "cu.ft. per ton-mile" competition, a measure of applied volumetric efficiency. The all-time record was set by a loaded concrete mixer.

I think you might be wrong in this statement. Check out rocket sled runs in New Mexico during the late 50s and early 60s. Just an item of interest the land speed record set by one of the later rocket sleds is over 6000 per hour--unmanned of course. The rocket sled completed the 3.61 miles in only 6.2 seconds.

I will try to find the link on the manned run that pulled nearly 40Gs and lived. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...v14/ai_8339225

I believe he is dead now, but did not die from pulling the huge Gs. He was badly bruised and suffered from temporary blindness. After his trip down the track they discontinued manned high speed runs.

Yeah, I remember the footage was wicked looking... It looked so bad I thought he died... It's pretty insane... 40G's for a few seconds is unbelievable... Those are the forces that F-1 drivers suffer when they hit a wall doing 150mph!!! But they only experience that force for maybe a tenth of a second...
