Rattling from the engine bay

When i start up my car, from what sounds like the rear of the engine, where it meets the trnasmission, i hear a periodic rattling that is directly proportionate to engine rpm. I've never owned an automatic transmission before, so i don't know if it has anything to do with that, but for some reason i have a feeling it's a cracked flexplate, and i'm not even sure what that is.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, scotch in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA !!!!!

Does it still drive ok? My car made a rattleing sound for a while, but I had recently had my timing belt covers replaced and on further inspection it was just a small piece of plastic from the old covers bouncing around the engine bay.

It drives fine, far as i can tell. I checked around hte engine bay, and it's defidently coming from behind the engine. I have access to my garage this weekend, so i'm gonna get it off the ground so i can get under and check it out.

Yeah sounds like a flex plate

When you get the car on ramps, if you get underneath you should be able to isolate it to the area between the trans and engine, but maybe it's a loose heat shield.

If it is a flexplate, you can get a new one for about $25 from Subaru, the crappy thing is that you need to pull the transmission...
