What are my best options
I have 2 issues to address...
1) I have a cracked wheel? Is it worth trying to get it fixed, or just give up on it? The crack is about 1.5" long on the inside lip (where the tire seats). Is that typically repairable? 2) I am thinking about replacing steering rack and tie rod ends because of some strange steering and tire wear phonomena that have been occuring on my car. Should I get new, re-man, or used parts for this? I'm afraid that if I get used parts the same problems will show up soon. Mat

1. Yes it can be welded but I would get another wheel. You can usually find them real cheap on ebay.
2. Are you sure its the rack causing the tire wear. You should probably take it to a good alignment shop and have them look it over. There are many things that could be causing the phenomenon and the Rack and pinion is usually the least likely culprit. |

Yea...only problem with finding a new one is that it's an 18X8 Konig Flight. They're expensive to buy 1 new one, and on e-bay there are only full sets :-(
What should I look for in a good alignment shop? Probably no chain shops (Midas, Meineke, Advanced Tire, etc.). What about the dealership...would they be any good?

I usually go to a local CarX for alignments. They charge $52 for a 4wheel alignment with a 90 day warranty. They also give you a printout of your suspension geometry measurements before and after the alignment telling you what adjustments were made. If they cant align your car they will usually tell you what needs to be replaced. As far as the dealer goes, like Manarius said, expect to pay $100+ for an alignment if all goes smooth. |

As long as the crack isn't near the lug nuts, you can have them welded. I had mine done for 40 dollars but, the ride isn't as smooth as before. The weld does have some weight on it, even with a balance, you can feel it a little. Make sure you go to someone who knows how to weld rims.

Thanks for sharing your experience with your cracked rim. That's what I was afraid of...I guess it'll never be the same I put the OEM rims back on and there's alot less harshness (Koni struts) and generally more friendly ride. I'm not hatin that! Buuuuut, I'm a bit bummed that I won't have my wheels on for a while...anybody wanna buy 4 wheels/tires...one of which is cracked?
