I've started my car at -22F without pressing the pedal...and that's with heavy weight oil. As far as I understood, you should NEVER press the pedal during start up.

Never say never. While it is "normally" not necessary to use the gas to start a fuel injected engine under normal conditions, there are still occasions when it is necessary. All it takes is one good flood to lock you in your parking spot cranking away untill the battery finally dies. Just being cold isn't usualy a problem, but cold and wet is sometimes a difficult combination to overcome, as one of the early TSBs for the SVX regarding injector icing would attest to.

I've started in -40° and never touch the gas. The only time I had problems starting was when the engine temperature sensor failed.
