CEL Error Code 23

Has anyone ever has this error code?

On svx-iw.com is reads "Abnormal voltage from air flow sensor." Is it talking about the MAF? Should I try cleaning it first before replacing it?

You can try that. Some people have found theirs in need of soldering. See if you can find one in working condition to confirm yours is bad.

Did cleaning it with vinegar help? I am going to try CRC electronics cleaner tomorrow evening. I will let you know what happens.

I sprayer the MAF and connecting wiring harness with the CRC cleaner this morining. It was very dirty as well as the air filter which I changed. The car did not stall out all day. I did not have a chance to clear the error code and the temp today was only 50 degrees, so I am not sure if it worked officially or not.

They had it a my local auto parts store (Checkers) for about $8. Make sure you let it dry, because it is highly flammable.

Thumbs up

This evening I changed Knock Sensor #1 on my SVX. Took about 2 hours, since I removed the alternator and reset the error code. So far so good. I guess by cleaning the MAF with CRC cleaner the code 23 error was fixed as well. BTW: Well worth the $74 from Subaru for a new knock sensor.

Yeah the CRC did jack for mine unless you count that I now know that it has colors inside.... otherwise I picked one out of a junkyard from I think a legacy and it about 95% right but for $30 instead of $300 I wasn't going to say no to a chance

Angry

Damn it's back. CODE 23 F****CK! Guess it's time for a new MAF? Or maybe not?

I have a god awfull whistle noise comming from the throttle body area (maybe a leak). Would that cause the MAF to malfunction? My thought is probably not since it is after the MAF on the intake.

Hey Thundering02, did your replacement MAF work?

Yes it would. You've got it backwards: any air leak before the MAF is fine. Leaks after the MAF allow unmetered air to enter the engine and that is bad if not controlled.

What would be the best way to test for a leak? Carb cleaner on the hoses maybe? Vacuum line tester?

If the MAF is generating an error it's an electrical problem. It can't detect if there's an air leak. Either there's no signal or a signal that's out of acceptable range.
