Finished!
I actually didn't finish the job until Christmas day, because I'm not that experienced and I worked on it on and off because there was no hurry to get it done. I was also slowed down by bolts that refused to move and the fact that there isn't much room for your hand under the intake manifold. I'm sure if I did it again I could do it much quicker. Rufus' write-up was a big help, and by following his instructions I was able to get the job done.
Here is a quick overview of what I did: 1. Removed belt cover 2. Removed belts 3. Removed alternator 4. Removed engine lift bracket and moved the compressor out of the way (see pics) 5. Removed and replaced both sensors. I have now replaced both oxygen and knock sensors with nothing but help from this site. Thanks guys. Here is a pic of how I got the compressor out of the way. It was crude but it worked:

Blue,
Great pics! Have you been able to put an ohm meter on the sensors you removed to see which one (or both) were bad? Did you use a 12mm wrench or did you come in with a socket? Please post back once you've had a chance to drive the car for a while -- I'm very curious to see how performance has been improved. Thanks again for posting the pics! -Bill

Blue,
Your "old" sensors look new compared to the passenger's side one I replaced last night! Its case was cracked all the way through almost all the way around. Weirdly enough, it still had a resistance measurement within Subaru's spec ("approximately 560k ohms"). I really have to question whether it was working correctly under dynamic loads (i.e. at other than idle....) -Bill

Collin, how did your install go? Are you still getting code 56 for the EGR system?

Look ma, sensor guts!
Finished off the driver's side sensor this evening and actually did not have to remove the engine lift bracket. I was able to do both sensors after just removing the alternator. I've got a bunch of pics in my locker of the removal and installation. A small part "grapper" - little tool with 4 "fingers" at the end was invaluable on the driver's side sensor. I also found that if you clip the "wings" that are on the female connector for the driver's side sensor it is much, much easier to thread it back to the male connector under the throttle body. Note: while my car was not throwing codes for either knock sensors and they both checked out within spec (~560k ohms) when I put my digital multimeter on them, the case on both sensors was cracked all the way through - the picture above is of the passenger side sensor (next to the new sensor). Guess this is what happens after 13 years and 186k+ miles. Now we just have to see how she runs! -Bill
