Front Diff repair?

Hi Guys,

How difficult is it to repair the front diff?

Mine was leaking oil (I did not notice as my wife drives it) and must have been empty for about a week - needless to say that my diff started making horrible noises.

There is a cyclycle, thumping, clicking, noise that gets louder as the car gets faster. This is more prominent when the gas is applied but there is no sound when the car is in park and the engine is revved up. Basically, I think a tooth (or more) has broken off one of the cogs in the diff. (The car still drives great - except for the noise)

Do you have to remove the transmission in order to repair the diff?
Does the diff live in tranny?

Any help on this topic would be greatly appriciated as my beloved SVX is dead!

Cheers
