Just a question. Do you guys every use after market parts on your cars? I checked out autozone online and carry a Bosch universal O2 sensor for $65, and an Bosch o.e. type one for $99. Just wondering what the preference/recommended brands are. I personally love Bosch for my camaro and use them whenever possible

Aftermarket parts installed on my car since purchased in November 2003 at approximately 104,500 miles:
AC filter dryer, air filter, timing belt, right rear wheel bearing, right front half shaft, water pump. And for perspective, Suby parts in that time frame: AC high-pressure hose, left rear wheel bearing, radiator, hood support struts (the preceeding items were provided by the dealer at time of sale), trunk support struts, oil filter, ATF filter, passenger window switch, antenna mast. The left front half shaft and alternator were new at purchase and are probably OE parts. No problems from anything. dcb |

On my most recent visit as a valued customer to my Russel Subaru Stealership, I needed a Knock Sensor. They charged me 98.17 over the counter for the part.
The MSRP for this part is $66.37, and subaruparts.com price is $50.57

Hi John, Did they ask you to bend over when they delivered the part? Take care, BOBB

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price is just that....a suggested price. Dealers can chose to use this price, or mark up as they seem fit for their location. There are 3 Wal Marts within 40 minutes from my apartment and the price on some items varies at all three! Why? Location. It's the same reason why dealerships in big citys tend to be more expensive (heck, everything in big cities tends to be more expensive). At my shop we do have our own list price above MSRP. Most of the time I do not charge this to service customers, and I never charge it to retail customers. But I am under pressure to do so. The two closest Subaru dealerships from our dealership also have their own list price which they charge all the time with very little exception. They both do very well. Their prices are higher, but the people in that area don't seem to mind. The market can bear the higher prices, so it works out for them. If you could charge more for your product and still have plenty of people buy it would you do it?

I would have to agree...they nag us over tiny percentages quite often. We are supposed to charge a certain amount over list on everything the goes over the counter except what I discount to internet customers, new car customers and accessories. They probably secretly hate me here because I discount darn near everything. I can't help it though...I never feel right about charging $40 for stupid things like gaskets and such. When they start nagging me I just ask "Do you want to sell the part or not?" They usually leave me alone after that.
