The hose connected to the bottom of the canister is the Ō vent in the bottom Ō which I referred to through which fresh air is drawn during purging.

Like a fool I was working from illustrations in the manual which are not at all clear as my wife was out in the car but the flaps etc. are after the ducting I had in mind. However I dropped a real clanger because on now looking at the beast in the flesh it is obvious that all the ducting is on the cabin side of the bulkhead. How silly can you get.

I don't thnk it has anything to do with the purge control solenoid valve from what I can see of where it is placed but you could trace the wires. Another thought. The bonnet (hood) is sealed at the rear edge, just in front of the A/C intake vent, with a rubber compression strip. If this strip is damaged or out of place engine fumes might be drawn into the A/C system. Worth the simple check involved.

Scott-
Double check the fuel hoses near the fuel filter. They can commonly leak in that area. Also. Change that brake fluid! GEEZ. Mike |

It'll get done soon, no worries.

I looked again, and found the hose from the bottom of the charcoal cannister wasnt plugged in to the hole going to the fender...it was just laying on the bottom of the underguard.
Engine was too hot to plug it back in, but i'll do it in the morning, and then drive to school, we'll see. Somehow i doubt that's the problem, but oh well...

No responses? Was it that hose causing the problem?

Oh, sorry guys. No it was not the hose.
A little more detail: Only smells after moderate acceleration (shifting in 4-5k range), and also WOT accel. Smell gets exponentially weaker if the heat is on. (you'd only smell it if you were trying to smell it.) Havent needed the A/C, so i dont know about that. I'll try the "vent" setting tonight and see what happens. P.S. There has been no change in gas mileage, or acceleration speed... No smoke out the exhaust, nothin *shrug*. I'm tempted to just drop it, and let it be, but it's sooo strong i cant stand it anymore. Is inhaling gas fumes bad for you?

Does it also smell like gas when you open the sunroof?

so you've been huffing on gas fumes for what, like two weeks now?
you may want to take it to a mechanic sometime soon.

With the whole climate control off is where it smells the worst. I open the windows (and sunroof) to air it out if I dont need the heat. You can barely smell anything outside the car, even with the hood open. <-- Me. I have seen no ill effects of this yet, so i'm holding off as long as possible before going to a shop.

The fuel lines run inside the rocker panels. Maybe there is a hole in the fuel line inside the car. That would be strange.

The one major difference with A/C is that the radiator fans are always running - they shift air from engine compartment to under the car. This is warmer air, so if car is not moving (like sitting on traffic light), the air will rise and can be drawn into cabin compartment. So far this is just a theory. I just got the gas smell showing in my own car . It started 3 days ago and I get it only when car is warming up (~3-5 minutes after start) and only when it has been colder than 60 degrees outside. Searching, haven't found anything yet. |

Have you checked the rubber compression seal which seals the back edge of the hood just in front of the A/C intake. If it is not OK engine smells could be entering the vent.
I mentioned this previously but have not seen confirmation of it being checked. Other than that I canÕt throw up another clue.
