Rash of Ebay and PayPal Scams
Is it just me, or is everyone getting a bunch of these lately? I'm averaging one a day.
All of them extremely low quality done by outrageously amateurish non high school graduates, who don't even know how to hide the source of their domain. What really ticks me off, they don't even come in on the email I use for PayPal and eBay.

I am starting to become very careful when it comes to ebay. There are more and more scams all of the time. It never fails that the bad apples find out about a good thing and ruin it for everybody.

I just got one of these the other day. I went directly to paypal.com and reported it. What a major pain in the a$$ that people like this are allowed to consume oxygen at all.

It tears me up. 95% of people are inherently honest, 4% aren't involved, and that other 1% is the scum you are talking about. I just wish they were at least good at it.

Its the Holiday season. Scammers of all kinds come out in full force because people are stressed and less likely to be cautious.
I love when I get an email telling me that I need to update my account information or they will be forced to close my Chase online credit card account. Its funny because I don't have one. Seriously though, no matter how many times you tell people that companies will never ask you to update or confirm your information, people still ask me "Hey, I got this Email, do you think I should update this?" Which part of "...will never ask you to update or confirm..." do you not understand???? I almost laugh in peoples faces when they ask me about the Nigerian scam letters they receive. They are eager to help, but are concerned about giving out their bank account info.... DUH Doug

I don't trust paypal or ebay at all. Paypal is a POS service and ebay is... well you know...
I just got pissed off and started my own merchant account. If I am paying paypal 3%, I might as well pay that to someone that will actually send me the money in my account within 24-48 hours.

PayPal put my check on hold because when I attempted to at first pay with my Debit card, it said I has insufficient funds. And then when I made the payment with an eCheck they put it on hold for 5 days. I called up their customer service and the person said it is some sort of security feature to ward off fraud and they cannot manually clear it. The guy I dealed with seems mostly legit, I even called his cellphone by mistake while he was watching TV, among other reasons.

ACHing the echeck or physical check takes 48 hours legally. Why does paypal hold it for 3 extra days? They can make money on short term interest at the bank of their choice.

I won a bid yesterday on an actuator, and immediately paid by PayPal. Today I get an email telling me to cancel that PayPal and pay the amount to another PayPal account.
It could be legit. Maybe the guy is splitting up with his mate, or is just incorporating his business affairs, and my transaction is in the middle of all this. But then the new PayPal address ends with @gmail.com, and isn't that a free account? So I should "cancel" the eBay registered PayPal account thats based on a cable internet email, and "Pay" to some PayPal account out of the blue based on a free email account. Well..... I ain't doin' it without some sort of proof this seller hasn't had his eBay account hijacked. And that's what I emailed back. I hope this doesn't cause me a negative. I paid immediately to the PayPal account registered to his eBay account. But when did that ever stop anybody.

Well, Google mail accounts are invite only so either this person is part of a scamming ring where the other scammers use Gmail, he is a legit person with a friend who lent him a gmail address which he decides to uses for his online retail since Gmail allows up to 2Gbs of storage or he is a scammer with friends.
All I can say is keep in contact with him, find out if other parts of his PayPal profile are legit let alone there and if he has an Ebay account check out his feedback. Quote:

We've had problems with people scamming our customers on high dollar items. Here's how it works.
Customer buys item X Scammer emails second to highest bidder telling them the winner has backed out and they can now buy item X Second to highest bidder sends money via western union to an international address because we're supposedly 'out of the country on business' The only way we can stop this is by making our auctions private, but that usually makes people suspicious and less likely to bid. It really stinks. |
