engine swap questions

as i've been talking to people about my upcoming repair job on the left front steering assemblies I encountered a friend who mentioned that I might want to consider swapping my engine out into an old volkswagon (maybe a late 80s/early 90s) I've heard of people doing this before but how viable is it. also...is there a list of known model/year compatibiliy for this type of thing? I have a 92 svx lsl awd as per my sig.
