Angry Tranny Might Be Dead !!!!!

HMMPH!!!!

Well I started my svx today and when I put it in reverse it JUMPED back and I had to slam on the brakes. OK I thought this might just be I hit the gas too hard (not hard to do in the SVX) well then I put it into drive and it wouldn't go forward but when it did it made a really weird grinding noise under the hood. So I tried the other gears. 3rd is good it goes fine, 2nd a little worse but it still goes ok, 1st however makes the car jump back and forth like you slam on the brakes. Anyone know what this is? Is it the tranny or something else? Thanks ~Dennis

Sounds like your tranny is in 'limp home' mode. When this happens, third gear is the only one that really works.

On the plus side, my '96 trans is for sale for cheap! Just $400 plus shipping!!!

The TCU controls part of the shifting, but the forwards/reverse function is controlled by mechanical linkage between the shift lever and the transmission. If the linkage is misadjusted, you could have some interesting problems.

I can't explain why this would just magically happen out of the blue one day, but things like this often just fall from the sky.

I don't believe it's possible for the transmission to go into reverse without the mechanical linkage physically forcing that function. Somebody on this forum had reassembled their transmission and overlooked connecting one part, which I think was the shuttle valve for reverse, and this prevented the car from going into drive.

Check the linkage for proper adjustment and motion. Perhaps a return spring broke, or perhaps a piece of gravel is jamming something. ...just speculating, but give it a good inspection.
