Unhappy Had a good scare last night

Since my SVX is in the shop I've been driving my wife's wagon. This weekend she stayed at her sister's home in Reading and I had to drive there after work last night to pick up her and the kids. Anyway, I was driving on 222 with the cruise control on heading up a hill at the time. As I neared the crest of the hill I noticed that the car was accelerating and gaing rapidly on the cars in front of me. I went to press the brake pedal and much to my shock it would not budge and the car kept accelerating! I pressed with all my might for a few moments until it finally let go of the throttle and I let my foot off the brake for a second before applying it again. This time it worked like normal and I was able to slow the car down but not my racing heart. That really scared the hell out of me. I never had that happen in a car before and never want to again. A few miles later I got up the nerve to test the cruise again and aeverything worked like it should.

WTF happened?? Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any ideas where to start looking for info on how to prevent or repair this? Thanks!

Johnny,
I seem to recall a recall on the earlier Taurus for that very problem. Has the car had any recall work done on it? You might check with Ford and see. Or, go to the NHTSA website and check recalls from them.

Make sure to print up the list of recalls on your car and take them with you to the dealer. The Taurus has been recalled more times than my bachelor party.

HA! Get it? Recalled? HA!

No, really, there are a serious number of safety issues the Taurus has been recalled for, so make sure that your dealer goes over every last one of them.

Thumbs up

HAH HAH! You two are so funny

Randy and Nick, thanks so much for the info. I don't have a 3.8l engine it (3.0l) but I will pursue it with the dealer as soon as I get my SVX back from the shop. It sounds like that is probably the cause. In the mean time I will take Alan's advice and won't use the cruise control.
