2-3 flare in tranny, what can I do?

Today had the rare opportunity to sit in stop and go traffic and I realized just how bad my 2-3 flare is. Usually I only experience it on occasion, but sitting in slow traffic today it occured pretty much every time I rolled at 20 mph.

Is this something there is a fix for, or does it just mean start saving for a tranny?

Adjust the brake band NOW!!!! or else it will wear out the high gear clutch packs...
You need to loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw/nut 3/4 of a turn clockwise and then tighten the lock nut back up. And when you loosen and tighten the lock nut you need to hold the adjusting nut still...

Edit: sorry if I made it sound confusing look at this thread

start saving for a new trans. There's a lot of travel in the brake band solenoid. Usually when the brake band starts slipping it's already gone--meaning the friction material at the ends of the bands has fallen apart, tightening would help make the job of the 2/3's of the material left a lot easier but it's still just a bandaid. Chances are also good that you have low fluid pressure and your high clutch is going out if it hasn't already.

Not really an option, I just spent more money then anyone would pay me for my car to get a lot of other stuff fixed. Thought the tranny was at least one solid element in my car and I'd be set for a long while.

Wandering idle and a transmission flare could mean it is as simple as a bad TPS where the voltages at certain points are not steady and can jump around. I know I already called you and told you, but it is a good search for people in the future. When you have a couple minutes, I will go over it with you on the phone

Giday Troy, you are having a bad run mate.

The flair from 2nd to 3rd does not spell the end to the trans. What happens is that the brake band wears like an other friction device. The clutches in the trans wear the same, but their pistons just pushes them further, to do the adjustment.

During the 2/3 change, the band releases as the high clutch is applied. If the band needs adjusting, it will release too early, the box goes back to first till the high clutch comes on. This is the Flair that we feel. Nothing is slipping.

I would say that in your case, it is also lower line pressure due to the age and condition of the box, and the low rotational speed.
I would do the band adjustment, not the '3/4 turn bit by bit' method, just do the full adjustment. Tighten the adjuster till it is firm, then back it off two full turns to set the clearance.

Harvey.

Re: 2-3 flare in tranny, what can I do?

the band doesn't really wear like any other friction. It wears like a brake pad on a caliper with a pin that doesn't slide...unevenly. Brake bands deteriorate at the ends and just like brakes when you start getting metal on metal..they act irratically. Transmission frictions don't really wear a whole lot in thickness. They are good and then they are bad.

Not a very good analogue, but you are not really old enough to remember when cars had band brakes.

Yes they wear unevenly, as they are applied from one end, but there is a lot of friction material on the band, for the adjustment. But like the brakes if they are not adjusted in time, metal to metal will happen.

"Transmission frictions don't really wear a whole lot in thickness. They are good and then they are bad"
Yes thats when they run out of adjustment.

Harvey.

Re: 2-3 flare in tranny, what can I do?

Thanks Harvey, this is definitely on my list to do sooner rather than later.

After troubleshooting with Tom over the phone last night and eliminating the TPS as the culprit for this AND my idling problem, he also suggested I do this.
