5 Speed issue
Alright guys, I was just gonna get a new tranny but want to check with you all first.
My 4.11 5 Speed is starting to make a grinding/growning noise when I let off the gas. Not sure what could be causing it Any ideas? Hard to tell if it is coming from the diff or the gearbox, but I have to guess, gearbox.

I was thinking of swapping one in an rebuilding this one.... Is it possible to rebuild it with RA gears? any good sources? do you think it is worth the while?

Are you sure that it is coming from the tranny. When I put in my tranny it was making grinding noises when I let off the gas. Turned out that when down shifting the axle was rubbing against the shifter bracket. I had to do some spacing to fix it but got it all to work.

not sure how that is possible, but I can look... do you mean the driveshaft? My DS should be clear all around.
I just found a listing on nasioc where a guy is selling this same trans with the same issue Funny thing is, he is only in the next county over

Somewhat unrelated, but my Brat was doing something similar, I was ready to drop the trans when I bumped one of the exhaust heat shields and realized it was completely loose and just sitting on top of the pipe...

Thanks for the replies guys
Tom, the info you gave me in PM is what I was afraid of. having never repaired one of these inside, is it difficult? I do not have a press, but can get one and is there a good source on info to do the rebuild? Since I might want to do it while I have it apart. Also any idea on whether or not RA gears can go in? I have conflicting info on it, but neither really tell why

Screw the R/A gears in a push box. I am pretty sure the clearances are a bit tough to surpass... I would recomend pressing your own gears and/or bearings either. I would suggest opening her up (this is a good way to get an understanding of how they work) and looking by feel and sound for some dead bearings. Also check appropriate gear wear.

I'd definitely check out the rear diff first...it's easier to replace, and if the tolerances weren't set right when it was converted, it is a very likely component for noise on decell....

Really, it bothered me enough I was gonna do it anyway when I pulled the trans. Could a bearing have gone bad?

if you don't pattern the rear you don't know what your backlash and pinion depth are. If they are out of whack it will burn up your rear diff gears and bearings.
