I have changed my attitude after hearing the full estimate from my mechanic. I am tearing this ****er apart and doing the work myself. If I can't finish it with parts I purchase and install myself at that point I'll call for help. Do I have to lift the car up to change these control arm parts because I'm guessing that I don't.

This is not a problem. I am going to get good at working on my car. Probably tomorrow I'll have it towed from the lot.

This is getting done right; done by me and my gearhead friends. They usually work on VWs but metric's metric -- right?

Sounds like the right attitude, I once again wish you good luck.

You'll find that the svx is pretty easy to work on. You'll also find all the help you need along the way here.

Lightbulb

the mechanic just informed me that his hourly rate is 92.50 as opposed to 76.50 if I bring my own parts. which means he's not doing the work -- or any work -- ever -- on this car.

****ing shiester. what's the best 16" tires I can get for the money?

insurance

Don't you have any insurance on this car? I am a claims adjuster for AAA, Comprehensive and Collision are cheap on the SVX in most states, glass coverage can be a ***** because of the cost of the windshield but still not terrible,... if your "accident" were because you hit a squirell and swerved it would be a COMP loss with no fault, a cheap deductible, and no increase on your rates.... not that i would ever suggest lying to your insurance company.. the blood sucking *$&*@%!

I don't have any insurance on the vehicle itself to speak of -- I'm 19 so I got the bare minimum afaik. I'll check but so far this accident has not been reported.
