How hard to pull the motor with the trans?

I am doing my 4.44 swap over spring break and want to clean the entire car up while I am at it. The car has 215k miles on her and she needs some love. I plan to replace the timing belt, water pump, cam seals, front and rear main seals, and do a tune up while I was at it. I figured if I can pull the motor easily while the trans is out it should make all of these other jobs easier. I was also thinking if I can easily pull the oil pan I would plastigage the the rod bearings and see how the insides look. Where do you guys suggest getting stock sized rod and main bearings? I don't want to do any machine work, just see how everything looks.

For tools I have a nice trans jack and an extremely nice gantry crane to do all of the heavy lifting.

Also the car seems like the AWD is not working some times and I think sol. C is sticking. Will I get a new sol. with the new trans?

If there is anything else you guys think I should do while the car is apart your suggestion is welcome

Thanks guys
-Marq

When I pulled an engine, I found that I had to pull the engine and then the transmission. I could not do it all at once. It might be possible, but much simpler to do it one at a time. Maybe you would have better luck than I did. Good luck with the project.

Pulling the engine and trans together is easy. I've done it 4 times now at least. Yes, Your new tranny will replace and probably fix all the bad things your current one has and is doing.

word to the wise. its much easer to drop the engine under then raise it out, with the trans connected still.

Okay call I have never heard of dropping the engine. Do you mean some how lift the car and undo the engine and tranny while the car is jacked up? Sorry, my husband is not awake I would ask him what this means. What do you lift the car up with? Can you tell me how this is done? I sure wish you guys lived closer so I could just watch and learn a few things. I have no mechanic skills but would love to learn how to keep my svx’s going strong.

When I was looking at it, that looked like the easier option to me also.

As for the other question yes you set the engine and trans in the ground by undoing the sub-frame and then lifting the car and pulling the combo out from under it.

Is there anything else you guys recommend doing while I am in there?

How long can these motors go? The engine feels real strong I just want another 150k or so out of her.

I am also looking at replacing the front brakes and cross drilling the rotors to help keep them cool, they are warped badly right now. What kind of pads have you guys had good luck with, I go up and down the canyons here alot?

It is possible, and not too bad. I had to rebuild the tranny in my 94 ls and i pulled motor and tranny together, i figured i should go ahead n replace the waterpump, timing belt n pulleys, and replace all valve cover gaskets and put new plugs in it while i had it taken apart.

Actually, if you look at the history write-ups of the SVX, the bodies WERE lowered onto the engine during assembly.
So, yes it must be easier to do it this way, or else they would not have waisted the time doing it the Anglo way.

I found it quite strange when I first read the papers on this, but after considering what the options were, I could see where this would make more sense.
