Struts?

I want to replace my SVX's struts. They're 14 years and 140k...something old. Subaruparts.com lists the parts as about $130 apiece. Is that my only option?

I think it's OEM, Gabriel (special order says their catalog), Koni's or big dollar options.

And you can do better than Subaruparts pricing if you go the OEM route I think..

...for "special order" for these Gabriel shocks as I would be interested in trying them.

Thanks!

Autozone shows them on their online page, but as 'not available' so I'm not exactly sure where to try to buy them...but they theoretically exist..

Maybe someone can call them and see if they would make a run for us...

Any idea where I could 'do better?'

struts

Likewise, I'm interested in some new struts, and there are not many options.

Anyone have info on the Gabriel situation?

RE: Gabriel struts

I spoke to Gabriel today, and they no longer make the SVX struts, and they have no unsold inventory, so they are not an option.

Just an amusing experience I had calling a local shop..

They are familiar with the SVX, and have done a good job doing my PCV valve. I have a set of struts + springs waiting to replace the 130k ones on my car, when asking them, they quoted me for 1,435.00. (13 hours of labor) WTF?!?!?!?!?! He definetly knew what an SVX was, but 13 hours and I'M providing the parts... ?!?!!?!? He quoted me $218 for valve cover seals, with myself supplying the grommets but not seals? I guess that is a decent deal...

sorry to hijack your thread, but i'm just curious if it really DOES take 13 hours...

No way on the 13 hrs.!!

Thats nuts. There is some work you may not typically have to do, pulling some interior panels loose or out to get the the upper strut mount bolts, but nothing that would justify those hours. Other than that, the removal is the same as any other strut - ask them for details. Compared to another strut job, you may be able to consider a couple more hours, but thats stretching it even. If they knew about the panels, it may add 15-30 minutes to the job.

The rear struts DO take a bit longer, as the top mount bolts are a PITA, but that is way high, IMHO.

If you can't do it yourself, at least remove the rear seat, and if you can, the rear deck panel (whare the rear speakers are) then the rears should be as easy for them to do as the front ones.

Regarding availability of original-equipment replacement struts, has anyone checked with NAPA or another major parts chain (at the counter rather than the Web)? That would be my first stop.

Cool Strut replacements

I got a set of strut inserts from Dayle at motorsport warehouse about 5 years ago - he arranged a special group buy (50 sets? - front & back).

Still got mine in the boxes here in New Zealand (never used).

No they are not for sale - but give Dayle a ring he may have a few around?.

regards

Steve in New Zealand
