the perfect family( street racing forum)
wow, that was really depressing. why can't people race at 4am when no one is around? why can't people have the *oddamn common sense to know when it's not a good time for horseplay?... better yet, why can't people just settle their petty penis size disputes at a local race track? I'm guilty of street racing alot, however, I have since grown up and to date have never hurt anyone but myself.
anyone else have any thoughts on this? hey is this the "official" SVX bulletin board? just curious. |

Are you just complaining about our ban on street racing, or commenting on the story on the 'street racing' page?
Either way, we have made our position clear many, many times and no more discussion is necessary.

the only way street racing will ever go away is if more and easier ways of legal racing are more common place.

i almost street raced the other night....
i was coming home from work at midnight, and was stopped at a light behind some ****tard in a riced out (is that possible in a domestic?) Chevy pickup (lowered - almost scraping the ground, neon lights underneath, big dumb vinyl graphics...). so i have my window open, and this idiot starts doing a burnout at the redlight in front of me. cool - now the inside of my car smells like burnt rubber. i pulled around him and took off - i just wanted to get away from this moron. i see him furiously trying to catch up, and i'm just pulling away from him *hard*. this was on an empty stretch, with no sidestreets. finally, i just let off the gas, and let retardo pass me. i didn't care if he was way in front or behind me - i just didn't want him anywhere near me. i slowed because i knew there would be side streets ahead, and i didn't want to be stupid. sure enough, he flys by me fast and furious-like, and about a 1/4 mile up the road i see him almost rearend another truck that pulled out and turned from a side street. funny part was, i was not in "sport" shift mode, and i didn't even have the pedal buried when i was gaining carlengths on this idiot. up to that point, i had been watching the MPG display, trying to see how high i could get it by driving conservatively..... teh LGT is pretty cool.

Racing is nothing more than driving with the risk factor / fun ratio skewed in favor of having fun. Most people's daily commute is considerably more dangerous than sitting in a padded room. It's a calculated risk. The reward for taking the risk of getting into a car is that going somewhere doesn't take all day. Sometimes the reward is having fun, and some people are more comfortable with danger and they feel that the fun-factor is worth it. Sanctioned racing seeks to reduce the fun risk, but that doesn't always happen. (Think of the Dakar rally for example.) People have this strange hyper-sensitivity to the idea of driving fast, but don't seem to complain about the rampant tailgating problem that exists everywhere. Speed mostly affects the severity of an accident. Following distances affect the probability of an accident. I think realizing that puts things into perspective. Frankly, driving stupid is worse than driving fast. The problem is when you mix the two together. The Dakar rally is an interesting example of how sanctioned events are sometimes not particularly safe. (Drag boat racing also springs to mind.) I'm endlessly amazed how nobody blames the spectators for being run over by the racers. They don't get mauled because the car is going too fast. They become goo on the windscreen because they're too stupid to keep a safe distance. Darwinism at it's finest. If you stand where they can hit you, then you might get hit. Duh. The same rules apply to the race drivers, particularly the Dakar racers. You might die if you enter the race. Nobody's keeping that a secret, and nobody's holding them at gunpoint. Willing participants. Need I say more? Despite the obviousness of that, some people are desperate to blame somebody other than the victim. Italian Meoni died during the Dakar rally, not from it. The media could never just say it in plain English, but he simply had a heart attack. What do you expect from a 47 year old guy, driving thousands of miles in hundred-degree heat as fast as humanly possible? The media mentions the accident and the heart attack in the same breath, but always the accident is mentioned first. Nobody saw him crash, and there's no evidence that he was found next to his tipped over bike for any reason other than because his heart stopped working. --- The five-year-old girl who was killed during one of the recent Dakar races is often used to illustrate how innocent the victims are, but I can't figure out what her example is supposed to prove. She wasn't hit by a racer nor anywhere on the course. She was hit on a public highway because her parents were carelessly inattentive. If she had choked on a hotdog served by a vendor at the event, would the sensationalists try and pin that on the racers too? ...or maybe I'm missing the point. Perhaps danger is the appeal, and that is why it's sensationalized. [edit] I might add that more people were reported injured or killed driving to and from the event than actually participating in it. [/edit] I guess what I would certainly agree with is the 'common sense' part of the original question. I particularly don't understand the sympathy for morons. Paragraph three (Racing is nothing more...) is really my point. The rest is just to illustrate how the problem is sensationalized and exaggerated. |

Mr.P, Lighten up a bit, while those of us who have been around a while (either registered or as a lurker) know full well the "official" stand this site takes on street racing (which I whole heartedly agree with), a newbie may have no clue about it and shouldn't be chastised because it has been "made clear many, many times" Quote:
