The Outbacks have front LSD's? I know the R160 rear diff is smaller than the front diffs. I wanted to do the LSD thing in the front of my Loyal I wonder if the Cusco diffs are for the R180 rears. They might be the same size as the front diffs. Yeah and welcome back, don't go AWAL on us again OK?

No, I'm referring to the VC unit out of the Outback rear diff that I'll be cannibalizing for its 4.444 ring and pinion going into my SVX rear.
I'm wondering whether the VC unit can be bolted to the front ring gear in place of the existing spider gears. I'm doubting that it would work properly... IIRC the STi front differential is a 1-way unit, i.e. it only limits slip on acceleration. A VC unit would tend to work whenever there was a difference in rotation between the sides, so it would probably cause erratic operation and then burn up fairly quickly. I'm just brainstorming through my fingers, ya know.... |

I reckond you need the TCU out of a Aust, UK, or European SVX. Not out of a JDM model, they have speed limiter, which you would just hate The Transfer TCU is playing with the C solenoid all the time. Reducing it in corners, applying it on the straight bits. If it did this with the VTD, it would cause binding coming out of corners. Does it use a band or clutch? Harvey.

This is a later trans, so it has no brake band adjustment.
I have no idea whether it uses a brake band or not... I would imagine it is a clutch style as it is a later model transmission. |

If the SVX TCU doesn't work, you might want to try a TCU from a 4EAT WRX. That model uses the updated VTD trans with no brake band... May be cheaper than sourcing a European or Aussie TCU... -Chike P.S. BTW, didn't get a response to the PM I sent u. Any idea what kind of power a stock 227hp 4EAT WRX puts down at the wheels?

Sorry for missing the PM... WRX 4EAT (02/03) makes about 162 at the wheels on a Dynapack. 04+ makes about 165-168 at the wheels on the same dyno. Results may vary significantly from these numbers on other dynos. |

I'm hoping the trans will drive without the FWD fuse connected... i.e. Solenoid C "off"... at least that would get me rolling until I could figure out an electronic fix.

I now have a baseline to shoot for tomorrow, when SVXRide and myself dyno our cars at Altered Atmosphere. Will post results in the Mod Section... -Chike

What kind of dyno? Some read higher or lower.
Numbers for comparison are only useful if done on the same dyno, or the same type of dyno if they are certified as equally calibrated. |

couple of things to keep in the back of your head tomorrow: 1. My "baseline" back at the end of June was 158-159hp (air temp was ~80degF) 2. Assuming a 30% loss through the drivetrain you get the following: a. 230hp@ flywheel = 161hp@wheels b. 235 = 164.5 c. 240 = 168 d. 245 = 171.5 3. The AWD dyno at AA is a DynoJet (rollers in the floor) -Bill (shooting for options c or d...but realizing his engine now has 186k on it....)

I remember someone posting a scan of the later TCU, and there were a few changes. They now use another sensor on the input shaft to relate the load that the converter has on it. A bit vage on it now, but if you can get the pics to open, I'll check it out. Harvey. Edit: it was in a .post by NormadTW called 'third gear only'. Looks like it will need the TCU from the doner car.
