if the svx was back in production

if the SVX came back this year would you think people would buy it? or would it fail and forever be 'that damn car with the windows that has the sparkplugs that are a pita to change'?

Depends upon whether or not Subaru actually tried to sell 'em this time. Price it unreasonably high as before, keep the cheesy fake woodgrain, don't offer a manual transmission, don't bother advertising... it wouldn't stand a chance. Given competitive pricing, performance and amenities, and with clever marketing, sure, they'd sell. And Subaru could use another platform.

If performance/upgrades came up to today's standards and pricing would compete with the g35, sure.

If the problems/issues were ironed out then it would sell.

- offer a 6 spd manual/5 spd auto
- better bearings
- larger brakes
- updated styling (headlights)

(also keep it below USD$40,000)

Hi there folks , long time lurker - first time caller.

Subaru spent more on advertising this vehicle than every other model in 92 combined.

The problem was the tag line for the commercials... specifically

"You'll drive so fast, you'll get so many tickets, you'll lose your license"

and

"Subaru SVX, use ALL of your speedometer"

Major networks refused to run these commercials, seen as flagrently endorsing speeding

Subaru spent so much money on these market reasearch campaings that they had nothing left when thier originals would not fly.

I think Subaru could charge the same amount for these cars (inflation adjusted) as they did originally. But hey should rebadge as Alcyone (Much like no-one would pay Lexas prices for a toyota - no matter how nice)

People don't see subaru as a luxury-sport car manufature - They see subaru as a maker of reliable, cabable utilitarian wagons and quirky coyote-ugly econobox rallycars (think WRX) for teenage delinquents.

Oh, and turbocharge the durn thing.

By the way, if your curious as to why the SVX failed in the first place, I recommend a book devoted to that very topic "Where the suckers moon" You can prolly find it in your local library.
Patrick.

I would not be able to afford to buy it. Currently I own all my cars and I like that.

I also have some reservations about "New" Subaru quality. I think it would not be as well made. I also think it would not be rust proofed as well.

If it looked like the 92-97 SVX, with the windows, it would fail again. Some people think the windows are strange. I do not know why.

I think Subaru is not known for sport luxury. People, I think, would spend their $'s on a BMW or something similar with the name. Now a rally car is another story but the SVX is not a rally car.

The first thing that drew me to the SVX was the style, then the ride and then the way it was put togeather, engineered. I think, this car was built by engineers. Marketing and sales did NOT have as much input, I think. I doubt if that would happen today. I think Subaru could have cheapened the quality of the SVX components and made more money and maybe got more people to buy it. I also think that if that happened I would not have the SVX I'm in TODAY.

I think both those items are true and the thrid one also.

I would really like to see these original commercials. They have to be somewhere. Use ALL your speedometer.
OH YEAH

Which reinforces the point that Subaru's marketing of the SVX left much to be desired.

The SVX was overpriced, in my book, but I think you're dead-on about the re-badging. That's a telling commentary on how dumb we consumers can be, but it's a fact.

I'd like to have a look at that book.

BTW, welcome.

I thought there was talk of a Legacy GT 2 door derivitive with new sheetmetal being called the SVX. It would have to be a full effort, not a Saab 9-2x waste of time. It be nice to have a 6 speed manual 250 horse turbo SVX.

Agreed. They'd also need to offer a 5/6 spd in today's performance car market, but that would be easy as they could use the one from the WRX and/or STI.

It was some Portland Or ad firm that came up with the ads and I think they went under after flunking the car ads.
