Chike if you are looking for a family car that you can auto x in then forget the Volvo. If you are going to spend 40,000 then go for a used BMW 540i. I will not lie to you. I had to fix one at the body shop a few years ago. It was a brand new 2002 540i. I about wet myself with the way it handled and took off. It had a 4.4L 6 speed, 5 passenger, go get you some family car from hell. I love that car. Yea it is the Ultimate Driving Machine!!!!

I thought about getting a used BMW or even a Mercedes, but I really like the safety of awd. A BMW 330xi or Mercedes 4-matic C class just isn't in the same league as the S60R - even though they're in the same price range.

The Audi S4 is the only other car I'm seriously thinking about, but the new ones have an NA V8 and weigh close to 4000lbs like a 5 series BMW or Lincoln Town car!

I guess I'm just smitten by the quirky uniqueness of the Volvo which reminds me of my SVX in many ways...

Great car, but only two doors and no awd for winter - VA can have some nasty winters every now and again!

Steve,

According to this thread, the S60R is pretty competitive in AutoX competition with the EVOs and STIs: http://www.mnvolvo.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15

The S60R isn't the lightest car in the world (curb weight of 3693lbs for 6MT model), but with the three adjustable suspension settings (comfort, sport & advanced), it seems to really help the car handle - even though understeer will be a pain!

Nice car, but aren't the 928 GTS' rwd? If so, it wouldn't be on my shopping list. Also, since it's a '93, my Credit Union would give me a higher interest rate on a loan than if a financed a '00 or newer model.

-Chike

P.S. I know you're a big Porsche fan! The V8 in those 928s is potent!

Actually, I'd rather get the Legacy GT than the Forester XT, but I'm looking at slightly more upscale cars. Personally, even a BMW 330Xi is too mundane for my tastes. I like stuff a little more off-beat and unusual...

That new M3 is really quick,I saw one run 13.5 at 106 bone stock, but then again for the money the forester xt is a real family car, drag racer and a true sleeper.
