North East auto to fivespeed experts.

Ok, I am currently saving up to have my tranny switched over to a 5 speed, cause the auto is juuuuust begining to go, and I have no intention of replacing it with ANOTHER weak pathetic tranny that will go too, plus I like a standard so much more....Problem is, I am not mechanically atuned enough to do the job myself, and no subaru dealership I can find knows what this SVX is(sick eh? THIER OWN CAR!). So I dont want to have them doing such a major job on a car they dont even recognize...What I am looking for is some one in New England(I am in NH) who has done this switch before, and would be willing to do it again(I can help as much as my capibilities will allow...I can field strip my CL175 Honda and have it still run when I put it back together again, so Im not a complete mech moron..). Or knows a shop that has done it before, and your happy with the results. Needs to be in New England...smallcar.com sells the set up alone for 3000, and does the entire thing for 4000, and I would be willing to pay out that 1000 in labor, to he who might be interested, but washington is just waaaay to far, I dont love my car that much.

They do not have any warranty or guarantee for their work. The X member was not updated and caused the bearing to fail and eat the tranny. They just charged me over $4,000. to rebuild it. When I picked up the car they had not even attached the gear shift boot to the console. I had a power steering leak and it had never leaked before and they disconnected my NOS system from the car before they asked me if I wanted to sell it. I told them no, I didn't, but when I found the power steering leak, I found that the NOS system had been disconnected and not put back on. They had cut hoses and replaced hoses (gas lines and nitrous lines) and didn't even hook up the hoses that had been disconnected. I did not authorize any engine work or removing anything from the engine, so was very surprised what had happened. I don't know what else happened under the hood now. When I call back to talk to Brian, he is never there and they won't tell me when he will be back in so I can talk to him. When I picked up the car, I was talking to him about the bill and what might have caused the whole tranny problem, and the phone rang, he walked away and I never saw him again. I am not very happy with the treatment that I got from them, and I would not recommend them for anything at this time. He isn't standing behind his product and will not give a guarantee or warranty - not a very good situation. I am not very difficult to work with, but I don't think this was the proper way to do business. I know I would never treat any one this way.

Man, that's grim and not very cool of Small Car. When you have some time, can you explain a little moare about the bearing failure? Which bearing, and what about the x-member or its placement caused the failure? This may be useful info for people planning to upgrade to the 5MT.

This may be an old thread but there is a place in Maine that will do a 5 speed swap on a SVX for $4000. About 20-30 miles from my house actually. East Coast Preformance in Ellsworth Maine. I went there and was going to get an air filter and they mentioned they actually had an SVX right out in the front lot. I can't believe I missed it. They said it had a bad tranny and they were going to do a 5 speed swap for the owner. I asked how much and they said 4k.
I was so shocked that there was a local shop that did 5 speed swaps on the SVX. I was already suprised enough to have a local Subaru dealership that knew what the SVX was and how to actually do work on it right. But a place that did 5 speed swaps? WOW.

But since you want a new 5 speed and small car is so far away compared to this I thought I might share. If you want a phone number or any more info just ask.

Wiz,

this is TOTALLY off-topic, but can you explain how a place in ME can have a name like Southwest harbor? I mean if they changed the name of San Diego to Southwest Harbor OK, but......

Earl,

Trying to get back on topic....what would you say to getting their $299 modded parts only kit, or am I correct in guessing you're so dissatisfied that you wouldn't trust/buy anything from Small Car?

I'm not really sure. I'm guessing because its on the southwest side of the island I live on. Just like Northeast Harbor is on the northeast side. Mostly rich people live there though. Like the CEO of Redhat Linux just bought a place there. And sadly Martha Stewert lives there too. No joke. Some guy tried to get past her fence around her house once to take a look around. She and I believe a maid or someone got into SUV's and cornered the guy until they got the cops down there.
