Rear binding is now gone! (replaced by tranny leak)
I had horrible rear end binding and had the FWD fuse in for two years until this past weekend. Here is the play by play:
1: Bypassed tranny cooler per Doug's instructions - no difference 2: Drained and filled trans fluid and replaced with Dexron III Mercon (3 times to make sure most of the old stuff got out) - a little less binding, maybe 20% less, but definitely still there 3: Added a small bottle (I think 4 oz.) of Kendall limited slip additive - wow, binding is completely gone! 4: Noticed that now I have a fairly large trans fluid leak from somewhere above the passenger side exhaust pipe. Only leaks when car is running (trans under pressure). I guess I "cleaned out" some sludge that was previously blocking the flow. Does anybody know if there is a common leak point or weak gasket in this area? Still, it's good to have AWD just in time for Wisconsin winter. |

from the location you describe I would tend to think power steering leak. is there a specific reason you have said transmission leak - don't want to steer you wrong.

Leak has been fixed!
Once again, this forum amazes me. Yes the "tranny fluid leak" turned out to be the power steering return hose which was cracked and brittle. It had split and was hemorraging onto the exhaust pipe below. I never would have found it without this forum. Many thanks.
My wife and I are in the middle of a 500 mile road trip and I'm happy to report that the rear end binding is still 100% gone and the transmission is performing perfectly. This is one awesome touring car. Bye for now, Chris |

Just a note: Power Steering Fluid = Transmission Fluid, in the SVX (and in most modern cars).

"The limited slip addetive method still retains its 100% success rate!"
I hope not to break the streak, putting some in my tranny tonight to cure binding! Pray for me! |

It worked for me too. After I changed to RedLine High Temp ATF, I had a binding in sharp turns.
Subaru advised me to add Goodwrench LSD friction modifier, and it cured the problem. GM part number 1052358. Redline sells such a modifier also. See at: http://www.redlineoil.com/products.htm They add it to their diff fluids, but not their ATF, apparently. ~John |
