Cleaning engine
I bought a foam degreaser or engine cleaner whatever you want to call. Basically the instructions say to spray the foam on areas where I want to clean then hose off with pressure. The instructions also say that vital parts of the engine need to be coverd so that they dont get wet. Which parts are they talking about?

I've been washing mine down for years
without covering anything. Just remember to not BLAST the water at anything, just a light rinse and you'll be fine.

Avoid the alternator at all costs.

I have washed my engines without any problems, but covered my alternator each time.

I've washed my engine many times, covering nothing. No problems.

Alt
When I cleaned mine i just covered the alt with a plastic bag. I also removed the battery just incase, but I also did it to reset the codes. Normal hose rinse worked for me.
P.S. Try simple green cleaner, it works better than the engine degreaser stuff. I haven't cleaned the whole engine with it yet, but will probably do it this week. Plus its environmentally friendly!

From years of personal experience cleaning the engines in my vehicles: I use Foamy Engine Bright from Gunk. Have not ever covered the alternator or the battery for that matter (why would you remove the battery?). Of course the key words would probably be common sense, I don't use a pressure washer on it, just regular garden hose pressure - concentrated on the obviously safe areas and lightly rinsing spots that look to be "electronic"
BTW, stay away from the citrus-based cleaners. I tried it on the Legacy engine a couple months ago and I'm STILL smelling that stuff.
