OT Impreza Clutch replacement.
Please, I need some advice.
I bought a used 97 Impreza and I have to take out the engine to do some work. While I got it out I plan on installing a new clutch. I have never done a clutch before but that won’t stop me. What parts should I replace besides the clutch and will I need any special tools? How does the clutch get adjusted? Anything to look out for? Thanks

Replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing, and have the flywheel turned, maybe even the pilot bearing if it feels rough when you turn it.
The clutch adjusts by the cable that attaches to the clutch fork on hte top of the tranny (but you probably figured that out when you were pulling the engine) Let me knoe if you have any other questionds, and I'll try to help

Hi Huck
When I get this done I may follow in your foot steps. What's the bearing inside the fork called? It feels shot when I spin it. The balls are wron out. How do I change it? There appear to be little wire clips holding it in. The clutch assembly is attached to the back of the engine. Do I just unbolt it? 4 bolts. Is anything spring loaded in there? Anyway I could get hurt? After the 4 bolts rae off, does it come out in one piece or several pieces? Any special tools needed for reassembly? Are there alignment pins for centering the clutch to the engine? It looks that way to me. Is there another bearing in the engine for the tranny shaft? Thanks

The bearing inside the fork is the "Throw-Out Bearing", should come in a clutch kit. To change it just remove those 2 clips and replace it (new clips isn't a bad ideal, but the old ones will do)
It's the pressure plate that is bolted to the back of the motor, it sandwiches the clutch disk between the flywheel and the pressure plate, just unbolt it, the new clutch kit should come with an alignment tool for holding the clutch in position when you bolt it back on. There is a "Pilot" bearing in the flywheel(or on the back of the crank, don't remember for sure on the 2.2, but think it's in the flywheel), which the very front of the tranny shaft goed into. Hope it all goes well

One note - don't press the new pilot bearing into the flywheel by smacking on it with a hammer; take a socket that just barely rests on the edges of the bearing and gently tap against that to press it in flush. There is a cool trick for pressing one out of the back of the crank without any special tools if you ever need to do that...

The pilot bearing is in the flywheel. I am getting the FW surfaced and I'l knock out the pilot bearing while I'm at it. Now I have to get the rubber booty that seals the fork ot the housing and the spring that hold the fork on the ball pivot.
