Cant Figure out the problem

Okey... driving down the road.. I hit the gas to pass someone.. and BAMM
I hear a loud pop.. then I loose power.. and the engine tone changes completely..
and I can hear a rattle coming from the passenger front... in trying to figure out what it was.. (before taking it to the guy that works on my car).. I noticed, that, when I hit the gas... the car didnt have enough power to get over about 4x RPMs..

After taking it in.... They have checked for a clogged exhost, he checked the timing and the timing belt, he checked each cylendar for compression..and who knows what else.... everything checks out fine.. but the car still has no power

any ideas ??

thanks guys !

Sounds like the front diff has gone and you're in "limp home" mode. Just a guess.

I've had the front differential die. You do get a loud noise as Aredubjay suggests. But that shouldn't have any effect on engine power.

I have seen spark plugs blow out their core, but that was mostly on big block US engines. And one presumes if a compression test was performed they would have noticed a spark plug with no ceramic.

Is the "check engine" light on? You can do a search for the diagnostics on this forum and check that for free.

My guess....fuel pressure

Fuel pressure may be lacking, or one or both of the filters may be clogged. Testing is pretty easy, so I'd check it out.

Good luck!

That sounds right for the no-power situation, but what do you suppose caused the pop?

I'm not certain, since I've never had it happen to me (Thank God!), but, from previous posts I've read, the "Limp Home" feature retards your ability to go too fast. (Yes, Rob, I said "retards," but, it's acceptable in this context. )

Could someone who's actually had to use "Limp Home" mode speak to this? Or have those who've HAD to use it, gotten disgusted and sold their cars?

The important question is. Is the check engine lite on, or is the power mode lite on? From the sounds of it low fule pressure could be a problem or posibly a bad mass air sensor.

OK.. here is what the machanic found

the "pre" muffler under the car, apparently blew out, and clogged up

ie: loud pop, and then loss of power, due to the exhaust clogged...

he is going to remove the pre-muffler, and just replace it with a pipe..

he checked the cat, and the muffler, those are ok, and not clogged..

so hopfully tomorrow, I will be able to let you guys know, if that fixes the problems.. I will post somthing, as soon as I know for sure..

thanks for your suggestion.. if this doesnt fix the problem. I will look into what you guys suggested..

(oh, and btw.. the check engine light, never came on.. )

Limp home only comes into play when the TCU thinks everything has gone to hell and doesn't know how to shift, or is missing some required inputs. If the front diff fell off, it wouldn't know....

A clogged cat will do the very same thing. Hope you did not have to drive too far with it. If gas can't get away, it creates a lot of heat, but hopefully you will not have melted the platinum out of your cats.

I was only joking Knight, but it is the sort of thing you would not want to drive too far on.
