My trip to work yesterday

I had to go to Merck in Rahway NJ Tues. & Wed.

Tuesday's trip was uneventful except for the truck that almost nailed SUBYDOO as I was trying to get on rte.22 in Union, NJ.

Yesterday is another story. They have been predicting freezing rain for yesterday morning so I left early.
I backed SVXY out of the driveway at 5:00 AM. It had just started raining in northern DE.
I got on I-95N and kept a reasonable speed (65-70mph).
I crossed over the Commodore Barry Bridge (down to only 1 lane your highway tax dollars at work) toget to the NJ side to stay as east as possible. They had predicted the northern & western suburbs of Philly would freeze first. I got on I-295N and stayed at 65-70mph. Around Woodbury NJ I ran into ice. I have 3 semi-bald Yoko AVS dBs on SVXY plus one almost bald Toyo Proxes T1-S on the right rear. The car got a little twitchy for about 5-10 seconds. The rear end did a little dancing. It woke me right up. After that everything was fine. I parked in the Merck garage (our security badges finally work) at 7:10 AM. I had coffee at the Merck caferteria and was now ready for my *:00 AM Meeting.
I left Merck about 1:30 PM and , in my best Santa Claus voice, said, "Screw Work."

I drove home. It was pouring very hard all the way down the NJ Turnpike (I hate that road). I had no trouble excpt for fools in SUV's and Taurus wagons. I did about 80. The guy in the new 911 and I stayed together until we hit traffic. Even with P*ss-poor tires this is a great car to drive in inclement weather.

When I got home Rosie was real, real, happy to see me. But hey that's a story for another time & place.

Exclamation Bad example

Hey Larry

Don't mean to be preachy, I know from your posts and your experience you know what you are doing.

However, one small comment; a set of tires is an awful lot cheaper than even the least amount of bodywork and spray painting.

Which reminds me. A girl I knew in college went out for a good while with a guy who used to rally cars. This was in the days of rear drive Fords, and he had the habit of driving sideways everywhere he could for practice.

On the telephone to her Mom, who was expecting her home for the weekend, she explained she couldn't go, because her boyfriend's balls were tired.

Juxtapose it and you will see what she meant. Lucky thing her mother knew how the boyfriend drove!

Joe,

Thanks for the advice. My tires have been bald (justapose it) for many years now. Seriously, Ive been getting up at 4-4:30 in the morning and out by 5-5:30. I get home at 6:30 PM or later. I go to bed around 11:30 PM.

I'm getting too old for this. And this is making me older fast.

I'm going to get new tires over Christmas.

cheap snow's..

i should probably just start a new thread for this, but oh well..

I got a set of four brand new Michelin Wintermasters in 205/55 r16 for $280 mounted & balanced.. They fit great, there's no rubbing, and I've had a couple of oppurtunities to test them in the slick stuff.. they're very grippy and very predictable. Tire Warehou$e had quoted me $460 at the cheapest for new snows.. guess it pays to shop around

That's good news Larry. I would hate to see anything happen to you at the speed you come off them ramps!!

See Adam's post. I have a few spare rims, and have toyed with the idea of fitting them with winter tyres, maybe even studded ones. We don't really get enough snow or ice here to justify it, but I may still go with the plan.

BTW, here's a plan. Ever thought of buying three more of those goddawful yellow get-you-home spare wheels, and sticking four of them on for snow? Might be interesting!

Joe

Joe,

Thanks for your concern.
I have a complete extra set (4) of 'almost new' stock wheels. They have been sitting in my basement in the boxes for about 3 1/2 years now. My original plan was to fit them with snow tires (Toyo Observe) for winter. However, it has barely snowed here for about 3 years. This storm last week is the first real snow in all that time.

Joe,

Thanks for your concern.
I have a complete extra set (4) of 'almost new' stock wheels. They are the lighter silver color. They have been sitting in my basement in the boxes for about 3 1/2 years now. My original plan was to fit them with snow tires (Toyo Observe) for winter. However, it has barely snowed here for about 3 years. This storm last week is the first real snow in all that time.
