Re: insurance for historic vehicle.
American Collector Insurance had no problem with my valuation of $15,000 for my "modified Subaru SVX" I do have "towing and labor coverage" for retrieving the car, but I also have $500 deductible for almost everything else.

Re: insurance for historic vehicle.
I resubmitted my application to American Collectors Insurance and changed my comprehensive/collision deductible from $0 to $250 to see what the change would be. Only $3.80 cheaper.

Re: insurance for historic vehicle.
there is a huge difference between liability and comprehensive coverage and also discount insurance and good insurance. i deal with a lot of insurance claims at work. some companies will send an adjuster same day and he will print out a check in his car, others the car sits here for weeks. geico likes to use independent adjusters so they don't have to put them on payroll so its a real crapshoot to see if you will get your car fixed in a timely manner if at all.

Re: insurance for historic vehicle.
The premium also has a lot to do with where you live, marital status, etc. All rates are based on actuarial (sp?) tables. If you live in but hump nowhere, drive less than 10 miles to work... it's gonna be stupid cheap compared to someone who lives in a metropolitan area. In the GTA ( Greater Toronto Area), we have the highest ratio in Canada of newly licensed drivers, and a correspondingly high rate of accidents / claims. When you live somewhere with a population of a couple of thousand, there's a hugely different number for the amount of claims for theft, vandalism, accidents, etc. In a small town, who the hell would steal your stereo? Who would they sell it to?
Years ago, I bought a summer home in very, very rural Quebec. At the closing, there were no keys for the upper rental ( it was a duplex). I asked WTF?? The answer was that there were no keys, as it was a patio door entrance. When the vendor built / renovated the upper unit, it didn't occur to them to think they needed to lock it. In areas like that, almost forms of insurance are cheaper. How small was the town? If you took a deep breath when you hit the the "now entering" sign, and the only stop light was green, you would pass the road sign to increase the speed limit leaving town before you needed to take another breath. LOL.. I never understood cheaper rates for married people until I got married, I understood it even more the first time I held my son in my arms. It would seem that the mantle of responsibility does affect where the edge of how far you'll push things lies. |
