Oregon has no sales tax and Washington has no income tax. If you dont mind some rain (light for the most part) its a great place. There is the coast that is close and mountains if you desire close as well. If you want more specific information and have questions feel free to message me. Might add that the drive from where I am to the coast is about an hr and to the mountains is about an hour and a half. It is nice and green year around.

Re: Advice Needed - Living in America

Figure I might as well put up a token defense for the rest of California.

Since the idea of earthquakes is a deal breaker, remember that most of them occur along the fault lines under the Los Angeles basin, the SF Bay Area, and along the coastal mountains in between. The same faults follow just off the coast the rest of the way north. This leaves a lot of the central and northern state mostly earthquake free.

In my case, the Sacramento area is about a 2 hour drive to San Francisco, a 2 hour drive to tahoe/Reno/skiing, and about the same to the napa valley area. Summers can get rather warm with at least a few heat waves over 100F. Winters are mild with very rare snow here in the central valley. Floods are a concern if you end up in a development that was put in a flood plain, but most areas are very well protected. And housing costs are fairly reasonable for an urban area in Ca. at around $200/sqft. So a 1500 sqft home ranges between $250,000 and $350,000 depending on condition and neighborhood.

I can't speak for the business tax side, but if you find a newer building to base a restaurant in, most access related regulations should already be dealt with or be easy to fix. There isn't a lot of middle eastern cuisine in the area, unlike the millions of sushi restaurants, so I would avoid the latter.

If you are looking for a quieter college town, San Luis Obispo is the home to Cal Poly in the central part of the state. As an old T-shirt said, it isn't the end of the earth, but you can see it from there. But with Big Sur, Hearst Castle, and Vandenberg AFB (rocket launces!), nearby there is plenty to go look at. It is also in an active fault area, so it has a flaw as well.

Further north is Chico, home to Chico State. At the northern end of the valley. Its about 2 hours north of Sac, so SF and Tahoe are about 4 hours away. Its got a fairly old timey downtown, a lively nightlife (Chico State has a reputation as a "pro" party school), and was one of main filming locations for the 1938 Robin Hood movie staring Errol Fllyn. Add in a major bicycling culture and the Thunderhill racetrack with its 25 hour endurance race and you've got just about everything. Plus slightly lower housing costs.

Oh yeah. And most importantly, there are at least 3 SVX's for sale on craigslist in the area that appear to be in pretty good shape.

Feel free to ask for more details or visit if you want to check it all out.

Re: Advice Needed - Living in America

well, I can definitly say stay away from California. The local government has their handes in everything and everything is expensive as crap. I moved to San diego, CA from Las Vegas, Nevada. Living in Las vegas, I had extra money to blow in the Casinos gambling. Here, I got an $800 pay increase, but I'm lucky if I have enough gas money to make it to work all week. I stopped driving my car and now drive my motorcycle all the time because it cuts my full bill in have. Gas prices here are 20 cents more per gallon, milk costs about a dollar more a gallon, my rent is $900 a month more, all my utilities are about 10% higher here. About the only thing that went down was my insurance rate, which makes no sence to me because it is estimated that 48% of the drivers on the road here are uninsured.

Arizona or New Mexico might be good. East Coast wise, anything south of Virginia, along the coast has to deal with Hurricanes regularly. North of Virginia the Hurricanes are rarer, but you get to deal with snow in the winter. Maybe Tennisee might be good, but I don't know about the cost. Delaware is popular with large corperations for tax purposes.

Re: Advice Needed - Living in America

Danny,
I'm sorry to hear of your troubles but moving to either country would definitely be a new opportunity for a new chapter for your family! I've lived in FL, VA, and UT.

I love the quality of the roads in FL and VA, the warmer temperatures are definitely nice and so is having the beach. Crime in Daytona Beach, FL where I lived wasn't terrible cost of living wasn't bad either. I also spent time in Jacksonville as well, since I was stationed there and it's a nice area as well. Florida is definitely one of my favorites and has a lot of night life and tourist spots. My only complaint was the random ghetto's tucked in really nice cities, unlike Atlanta or other large cities in other states where it's a distinct part of town they seemed to be more spread out. I never had any problem with crime or break ins, as far as business and jobs, when I was there between 06-10 the economy was in the ****ter and it was hard to get jobs, which is part of the reason I moved back to Utah, things have improved and I'm sure there are a lot better opportunities. There are some cool lack of taxes there that other states have.

Virginia Beach where I lived in Virginia was really nice, pretty area, and kind of a homey feel. It is illegal to curse in the streets however which is kind of quirky but not all that bad, I was only there for a year and most of my time was military related so I didn't have much to do with the civilian world other than entertainment and recreation. However I have family that live near Richmond and absolutely love it. You have the opportunity to be somewhat close to both beach as well as camping hiking etc.

Utah, where I was born and raised has it's quirks for sure, however it definitely is awesome for small business, family, and overall one of the lowest crime rates in the country. There is an awesome Lebanese Restaurant downtown Salt Lake that I've been to a few times, but Utah could definitely use some more Lebanese flavor. Utah is kind of funky when it comes to culture, there are a lot of different sub cultures as well as climate differences. Climate wise you have Northern Utah (Salt Lake County and surrounding counties) where you have everything from gorgeous mountains filled with amazing snowsport opportunities in the winter and gorgeous hiking, mountain biking, and other summer activities in the summer, to southern Utah that has year round warmer temperatures (not as warm as FL but similar to NV) where you have gorgeous red rocks, golf courses large reservoirs etc. The weather is constantly changing it can go from being 100 degrees one day to 30 the next day in the transition seasons. Summers are quite dry and warm and winters are usually quite manageable in the valleys, but can get sub zero up in the mountains where ski resorts are etc. Usually in the Valleys you don't have very many days in the single digits it usually stays 32+ Snow on the roads is really well maintained and isn't usually a problem, there are a few bad snow days, but usually in the valley it will seem like fall/spring time and up in the mountains is where it looks like a winter wonderland. I love this state and all that it has to offer, the conservative politics and liquor laws are kinda silly but you get used to them. There are all sorts of different things to get involved with around in different counties.

I have family in California both northern and southern and other than the high cost of living it's a wonderful place to live. In California be prepared for very strict emissions laws on vehicles as well as long commutes and tons of traffic. It is also a very highly competitive state for business and some small businesses really struggle to start up.

Just whatever you do... stay away from states like Kansas and Nebraska and stuff... they are boring! JK!

I wish you luck and if there is anything I can do to help feel free to contact me! you have my info and we chat on facebook sometimes so you know how to reach me!

Re: Advice Needed - Living in America

Danny, So sorry to hear of your situation. Hopefully you find what you want. The only advice I can give is stay away from DC. That includes a lot of Maryland and Northern Virginia. I agree with Old Tom about Maryland. That's why I moved to Pennsylvania. Also watch some of the really small country towns. Some times "They don't take too kindly to outsiders."

Good luck!

Re: Advice Needed - Living in America

Thank you all for your kind replies and assistance. We are currently discussing it in our family and see how to move next. From my side, I have a visit visa that is still valid for 3 more years. Will need to see if my uncle can get it for an initial recon visit and meeting personally with an immigration lawyer.

Still need a good immigration lawyer to help us out.
