unusual car stereos

I was roaming around the store of an ebay seller that I had purchased a keitai (japanese cellphone) from, and found that he sells all kinds of stereo and car equipment. in particular, I found this panasonic unit to be extremely intriguing, it has a vacuum tube, analog equalizer dials, and a cool magnesium look like some of my vintage japanese stereos at home.

Re: unusual car stereos

i had a guitar preamp with two vacuum tubes behind a little window so you could see them .... but they had a yellow LED behind them to make them glow.

all for show. amplifying DC voltage with a vacuum tube is too complex to likely be done in that head unit.

this one's more like the technics stereo I have, but it's still beyond my budget for now.

Re: unusual car stereos

It's kinda neat. Not something I would put in my SVX though.

Re: unusual car stereos

I would not want a vacuum tube in a car. Too unstable. Not very cheap to replace either. If you went over a speedbump it would be quite possible a warm tube would crack or break completely. You can tell when they are cracked because they will glow blue.

tubes aren't that fragile.

one 12AX7 preamp tube for left and right channels into a solid state power amp isn't gonna do squat for the sound. most good tube audio amps have many gain stages of tubes.
