how to find out the owner/contact info for a website?

can anyone give me a guide how to do that?

someone showed me how to do it on godaddy.com long time ago.
I have forgotten. I try to look around but it seems the site has
been changed and updated on godaddy.com

I'm looking at a "site up for sale", trying to find out some information behind it.

how do we make sure it's not a scam or something etc?

basically, an established website is up for sale. I'm kinda interested. It could be a decent part-time job. But you are sending some money to someone like a thousand miles+ away in the State and you never meet. It just worries me if it is a scam or something? Any opinions on to make sure this is true and a good transaction?

Search the domain name you are interested in at GoDaddy then click on the get info link after it comes back saying it is already registered.
