As I understand it, with the iris closed, you get more power at low rpm. With it open, you get more power at high rpm. I can't imagine it would be benefical to remove it unless you were doing other mods to the intake system.
I think it will just be driven by rpm. Closing at 2200, opening again at 4000?

It won't work at other rpms as it has to work with the Inertia speed of the air, which is a fixed speed due to the mass of the air.
Thats why it is opened at 4000 as the speed that inertia flow can increase the flow is too slow, from 4000 up. It opens to allow the inlet to move to a Resonate system as it works best as the rpm goes up from 4000.

Good Pict's, but he has got the info from the Road & Track description, that got it wrong.

The Inertia system is when the valve is closed,at low speed.
The resonate system is when the valve is open, at higher speed.

This is my description of the Inertia system operation.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1141

This is the Resonate system.

I believe you are referring the the little check valve behind the p/s pump? Where as the others are talking about the butterfly in the center of the manifold. I could be wrong but thats what i am getting out of it.
