who is running a legacy trannie

i'm getting ready to drop a legacy 4.11 4eat trannie into my svx and swap the rear lsd to 4.11 my question is my local subaru specialist who has an svx and a turbo legacy swears up and down that a legacy trannie won't hold the power of an svx i think with some extra maintance it wouldn't be a problem but i was wondering if any one had more experance with this, also should i get a shift kit put on the trannie?

4.11 is for the 5 speed and 4.44 is for the auto if Im correct. Had mine in for 8 months (1996 Subaru Legacy Outback trans) and have had no trouble out of it.

You shouldnt have any problems as long as the trans is in good shape. Better geared for the SVX to get moving anyway.

A 4.11 or 4.44 tranny will hold up BETTER than a stock tranny due to the lower gears causing less stress on the tranny, which equals less heat, which equals longer life.

Jeff, we've had a 4.11 4EAT out of an Impreza in the racer for the past two years. It doesn't get a lot of mileage, but all of it is fairly hard abuse.

Get a hold of SVXfiles, he modifies the stock resistor to improve something.

Yeah. The 4.11 geared 4EAT out of the Early NA Legacys is a nice tranny.

Jeff,
Make SURE the torque converter is fully seated in the tranny before installing it, if not seated properly, you'll bust the pump in the tranny when you tighten it down to the motor...the TC should be able to spin freely with the tranny bolted up to the motor, so you can turn it to line up with the TC bolts.

If you get the tranny up clost to the motor, and the TC would spin....pull it back ouot and get it seated correctly, or you'll be buying another tranny.
