Level 10 transmission

Is the level 10 transmission worth the $4000 price? How does it differ from the transmission motorsport warehouse sells? Anyone have experience with the company or the tranny?

There were a few Level 10's done in the late 90's early 2K's but, most of those members seem to have disappeared. I believe one of our members in the UK had one done and shipped and had some difficulty. Another member had some difficulty when Level 10 tried to use the same procedures they'd used in a 92, in a (I believe) 96. I've yet to hear, positively, that the L10 was worth the money, again, since those who have a history with it have dissappeared. However, if there is/are a member or members who have a history with the L10, please speak up. This was the "save-all" bulletproof transmission (or so said some) that we had all dreamed of.

Yes he does. I remember being in it and was shocked how well it shifted compared to my 4EAT.

Yeah it's a good tranny, and they were nicer to me than they needed to be.

However, that was a different time in SVX-land (May 2001). If I was in the same boat now, I'd swap into a 5MT, or at least a 4.11 4EAT.

Some searching with level 10 and/or my name should find you lots of info.

On the Level

Phil and Belha [b3lha] in the UK had a Level 10 fit-out to their car. It recently went toast, and they had to refurb the box.

I was surprised, as the blurb seems to indicate bulletproof, plus the ability to handle way more hp and torque than the SVX puts out. Now, in saying I was surprised, this was put in context when I realised that they have about 250 or maybe 280K on the car. And I mean miles, not puny kilometres!!

Phil may correct me on the above mileage, but it's pretty high. A lot of the cost they paid getting the job done was in shipping the heavy tranny to and from the USA. When the box failed, Level 10 offered to send the special clutch packs to the UK for free, so that Phil could get them fitted there locally without high transport charges. This is obviously a compromise, but I was impressed at their customer commitment, since the cost of the clutch kit at Level 10 is $500!!

They said it was the first one to fail, so it seems a good kit for high mileage. The UK transmission company said that they would not use such an expensive clutch pack if they were fixing the tranny themselves, the standard available set was "good enough" in their view.

However, since Phil had never fitted an auxiliary cooler with the Level 10 tranny in the first place, I think it is a testament to a good job that it lasted so many miles. But that's my opinion. I know Phil was unhappy it failed, having paid so much serious money for it, and believing it was for the life of the car.

I reckon if you got a Level 10 kit, and also fitted an extra cooler, it probably would outlast the car. It would want to at the price. I'm hoping to supercharge mine this year, and I don't want a manual tranny, so if, [maybe when ] the tranny burns up, I would be fitting the Level 10 clutch pack, that's for sure.

The 93 I bought from Shotsky has a Level 10 in it. I have not had a chance to drive it yet, so I am not sure how it shifts, but he loved it. I am getting the new air bag installed and will drive it in the near future.

but at $4k....I had mine rebuilt and I haven't had any problems with it. It's coming up on a year now. Spent $1k or so. $4k's a lot of money....about as much as the 5 speed kit from that company in WA that doesn't seem to have a perfect kit.

When I went to Reading III in 2002, there're one guy he had the level 10 tranny on his 92 Teal. He paid $4000 for it. We rode with him at the parking lot. It definitely shifted so firm and quick in my opinion. It felt solid.

I don't see him post alot or anything. I ain't sure how his L10 tranny holds up.....I think he's under 50k miles on his svx at that time.

I would prefer to have an automatic. I feel an automatic goes with the touring car theme of the svx. If I feel like having a more sporty ride I just get on my Ninja sportbike. Rebuilding a tranny may be cheaper but I live in Oklahoma. I have not seen a svx in the 8 months that I have lived here. I would not trust a Subaru dealer rebuilding a transmission they may not have any experience with. I hear so many stories about rebuilds lot lasting long because of mistakes in the rebuild process. With the level 10 tranny I can order it as a complete unit built by experts or at least people with some real experience.

If you can afford it, go for it. I suspect they look for a core exchange, even at that price?

It won't let you down, but you really should install a cooler with it if you don't have one already. It will only cost you 150 bucks, maybe less. Not too much to pay for the level of insurance it gives you against melt-down.
