GASP! I'm posting on the weekend!

The wife, our cat and myself. What do we all have in common?

We're all at the office at 2AM, Sunday morning.

The power at our house went out by 3PM. By 8PM the temperature inside the house was 55F and falling. We had no bottled water, MAYBE enough firewood to make it through the night and, of course, no working toilet.

The winds are REALLY high. I would have left the cat and gone to a hotel, but I was worried a window could be broken by flying debris.

So, we're sleeping at the office. Not the most appropriate thing to do, but then, that's why we have a bed here.

DTE says they won't even have an estimate for when we'll have our power restored until late in the morning. Swell.

Hey, at least there's no shortage of entertainment at a video game studio.

Nick,
I can relate. We've been displaced twice in the 23 Years we've lived in this house. Once by a flood (for 10 days), the other by an ice storm (4 days). Just cuddle up and keep warm. Best of luck on the power recovery situation.

I've been lucky, the only time I've had to leave the house is because of lack of refreshments.

Just don't forget tomorrow is a work day and get caught in a compromising position.

And you better believe I appreciate those that serve so I can continue to live the good life. My hat's always off to all that serve.

If we count up the number of times in a year that our power is out for several hours or more, it would probably average once a month. In truth, we go maybe two months without problems and then have our power go out for a couple days at a time. A couple weeks ago, we didn't have power for three mornings in a row. This is the weakest, most vulnerable power gird I've ever seen, and I'm now convinced I need either a generator or wind turbine.

When I lived in the mountains we had a similar situation. I called the power company and complained, their response was that with the rigors of the mountains those things would happen. I asked why they didn't put the power in the ground and was told that it couldn't be done, especially considering the amount of money involved to do so. I told them that the local cable company didn't think it was too expensive, that they had just put their lines underground.

Within a week the problem was fixed and we never had another problem.

Well, the 'rigors of the mountains' are not a concern of ours. Land here is very flat. The problem lies within the utility company itself. I understand that during bad weather like this they can have problems. But what about every other time our power goes out inexplicably?

I'm pissed. I am just really hacked. And my fish are freezing.

Edit: I have been calling DTE day and night and FINALLY got an estimate. It will be 14 hours before our power is back on. By then my fish will have probably hibernated or frozen to death.

I'm still really pissed, by the way.

*tongue in cheek* Can you light a can of Sterno under the tank? I mean some tanks are on metal stands with open bottoms. And you can keep the flame from direct contact, etc.... Of course if you have an acrylic like mine I'd pass. Time for the aqua rodeo and take them to the office also.
