High stall torque converter

Does anybody know if there is a shop that will rigg up a high stall torque converter for the stock tranny. Or possibly somewhere that sells them already done up.

Not sure how much difference it really makes.

You never tested your 0-60 and/or 1/4 mile time(s) before and after your torque converter install?

No. I didn't test it.

I only got it because I was having the transmission rebuilt by Level 10 and they said that since they were replacing it anyway, why not have the high-stall version.

I'm just about to have another transmission rebuild. A transmission shop told me yesterday that "if your fluid is black then you'll need a new torque converter".

Don't know if they were just spinning me a line. But since my fluid is pretty black, I guess I'll be getting a new one.

Phil, is it a new one, or rebuilt. Here in the US there are lots of torque converter shops. They cut it open on a lathe, check/replace clutches, etc. and weld it back up. I would think if you're going to go through the expense of a tranny rebuild, rebuilding the TC is a good insurance policy. Kind of like replacing the water pump on the SVX if changing the timing belt.

In a previous thread, Poweredx2 mentioned that he had a torque converter shop rebuild his with a 3000rpm stall. Said it ran him about $500, but he lives in NC where the cost of living is relatively low.

Last I checked all Subaru torque converters came in a nice shade of 'rust' brown. This pic was taken when Svxfiles was doing the 4.44 swap in his son's (boxer6) car...

Thanks for the comment's Lee. I had the torque converter fitted by Level10 four years ago. I don't know if they fitted a new one or modified the old one to have a higher stall.

I'll ask the transmission shop to recondition it and I'll mention that it's a high-stall version.

Phil.

Hey Phil,

If your tranny is shifting fine, just have the fluid changed and you'll be fine. Tranny fluid gets darker just like oil gets darker after a period of time. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad but it's pretty used up. Just imagine if your oil gets darker/black after 3000 miles.....this doesn't mean you have to get a new/rebuilt engine. You just have to change your oil.

On another note, Level 10 sends the torque converter out to be rebuilt by ProTorque in New York. I was told that it's not rebuilt at their facilities. I had my torque converter rebuilt with a higher stall speed at Protorque on one of my XT6s. I haven't had a chance to really test it yet since the first time I tested it, my brake calipers siezed up.

When mine was rebuilt, it came back a nice, shiny, glossy black color. My old camera doesn't show how it really looks.
