Impreza tech question
I'm kind of fishing here, but I know there are plenty of people on this site with non-SVX technical expertise.
I am currently swapping a new engine into my Impreza, and the clutch is shot so I am replacing it at the same time. The car is a front wheel drive 95 Impreza L. The clutch I got is apparently for the all wheel drive model, and slightly (and I mean slightly) larger than the clutch I have. The disc is probably 1/8 to 1/4 inch larger in diameter, and the pressure plate does not line up with the studs or bolt holes. My thought is to install the all wheel drive flywheel, which I have already ordered. Does anyone know if this will work, or cause any issues with the front wheel drive transmission bellhousing or starter location? Any help would be appreciated. The local parts chain does not carry the front wheel drive clutch kit. Thanks Mike

Whew! Had you installed the AWD flywheel, I would have been honor bound to report this mod to the Benz diciplinary gestapo, & have the car moved to the class with all the Mustang SVTs, & Subie STi's.
Ron.........and I expect that bad boy to DESTROY all Benz AMG competition this Sunday.

Glad to see you're finaly getting around to putting the motor in, let me know how it does.
And yes you could have installed the AWD flywheel without any problems, plus it would have opened up a larger selection of clutches. Hope it's all you expect it to be.

Agreed with the above. The AWD flywheel and clutch would have actually been an upgrade for your system, but the stock size is fine and will drive just as you expect it to.

Thanks, I may still end up going that route, so good to know. I still don't have the correct clutch, because it turns out that my 95 front wheel drive Impreza has a 93 All wheel drive tranny. Or at least the 1 inch input shaft, flywheel, and clutch from one, so I assume it is an all wheel drive though have not checked out the tail end of it yet. I pulled the part numbers from my existing clutch and pressure plate, and that is what they are. Surprise, surprise. Right now I have two new clutches, both wrong. I have a new flywheel that should match one of the clutch kits, and the correct clutch kit for my existing flywheel on order and due in tomorrow morning. Out of all that, I should be able to come up with something that works. The engine swap went fairly smoothly up to that point. By far that is the easiest engine to remove that I have ever worked on. I swapped the intake manifolds with all wiring and a few other parts between the two, and it is ready to go as soon as I get that new clutch. I do have one question, and forgive my technical language deficiencies: The 1.8 has some sort of vacuum diaphragm assembly on the passenger side, with one vaccum line connected to the intake manifold, a larger hose to the plastic intake, and a metal pipe feeding over to the top of the head. This does not exist at all on the 2.2, and there is no way to swap it over from one engine to the other. Anyone know what this is/does, and what the effects of not having it will be? I have the vacuum line from the manifold blocked off, as well as the connector on the intake. I had to swap the header pipe as well, but other than that, everything bolted up perfectly and all the other electrical connectors to the engine are identical. We will hopefully find out tomorrow afternoon if the whole mess runs -Mike

It would be very difficult to run an AWD gearbox in a FWD vehicle, as the rear shaft drive is supplied with gearbox oil internally and thus would leak everywhere unless a driveshaft was present. I'm guessing it's an FWD tranny with an upgraded AWD clutch/flywheel setup, unless there was a weird production change mid-year on that model. Subaru has been known to do that!

Thanks for the input. I guess there must have been a front wheel drive tranny somewhere along the line with a 1" input shaft, because that's definitely what I've got. All the front wheel drive clutches I found fit a 7/8" shaft. Anyway you look at it, it is definitely a Frankencar: 95 front wheel drive L model, now with a 2.2 mystery five speed with all wheel drive clutch and flywheel rear steering knuckles and disc brakes, larger front discs, and front sway bar from an Outback sport Subaru 18 mm rear sway bar KYB AGX struts all around H&R sport springs WRX wheels "custom" exhaust assembled from parts from several cars and an SVX exhaust tip Not the fastest thing in the world, but has turned out to be a reasonably competent autocross car and is a lot of fun to drive. Any thoughts on the mystery part I described in my last post? Thanks Mike
