Steering problem?

Does anyone know what the problem would be if, when im stepping on the brakes it becomes hard to turn the wheel (like a loss of my power steering) it only happens about once every other day or so. Also it does it some times when pulling into a parking spot without using the brakes, (or when im idleing into a parking spot). Is it the power steering pump, or is it time for a PS fluid change?

Thanks,
--Miles

It could be that you need to do the O ring replacement, and while you do that, you will change some of the fluid. The pump is possible, but when the O ring goes, it causes all kinds of symptoms. I think I would try that first. Good luck.

Hi Miles and many good ones.

What you state adds up to lack of steering assist at low engine RPM which is the opposite of what you should have.

Low fluid level washing away in the reservoir during turning ? Slipping belt ? Leak in hoses and connections ? Air in the system ? Pump/control system we will leave until last ??!!

Is there any sort of whining/vibrating noise when you are turning at low speed and have a load on the steering wheel ? If so good news and possibly the O ring and cheap !!!

P.S. Earl, I did not mean to butt in. You beat me to it. Trevor.

no symptoms except the whining

The only thing I noticed is the whining. It happens at low rpms when turning the wheel.

thanks,
--Miles

You may not think so but this is gooooood news. Air in your system ! An easy cheap fix .

Have a look in the "How to Documents", upper top right here and find out all about the "O" ring.

Thanks for all your help

Thanks for the help guys. I think after looking at the how to, I'll have a look in to see what I can do this weekend. I dont know if I will be able to do it myself, but I work at car dealership so I think that I could get some help easily.

Thanks,
--Miles

Also just check that there's a proper amount of ATF in the power steering reservoir. If it starts getting low it will get noisy.

Perhaps you also have a leaking power steering hose.
