Angry Legacy fuse problem...

My '95 Legacy keeps blowing the same fuse - the 10A fuse for the dash illumination.

Obviously, this doesn't make night-time driving exactly safe.

Any suggestions? I'm no electrics expert, so I'm prepared to just take the thing to a shop to have the short found. I'm ust not interested in digging through the dash for hours trying to find the stupid short.

Sounds like an intermittent short or a bad connector somewhere. These are always a bear to track down. Good Luck Nick.

I delivered the Legacy to the dealer this morning.

In other words, I'll replace a transmission myself, but I'll pay somebody to dig through the dash to find a short.

Update

I have talked to a few of you, seeking your advice, so I thought I'd post an update here, rather than telling the story a hundred times again (and wasting more of other peoples' time).

Basically, the dealer (while trying to find the source of the short in the ilumination circuit) shorted out the headlamp switch and the 'illumination control module.' They did this by plugging a meter into the circuit in place of the fuse. The meter reads to 50 amps, and when they ofund the short, 50 amps went through the circuit for an extended duration. I'll remind you that this is on a 10-amp circuit.

In the words of one of my coworkers, 'they're lucky they didn't just set the car on fire.'

So when the service writer called me, he gave me a quote for $735 to replace these parts.

Ow.

I was obviously pissed, because these were parts they broke because they didn't protect a 10-amp circuit with a fuse.

I visited the dealer and talked to the service manager. We agreed that they'd take responsibility for the parts, and I'd pay for the labor to install them - which comes to 2.5 hours. I had accepted, in my mind, that the short may take them up to three hours to find, so 2.5 hours total, instead of $735, isn't so bad. I'm probably being generous, but at least we're parting on good terms.

Now the question is when they can get the parts and when I can get my car back.

I'm glad it worked out that well. I was worried they might not budge. I hope they get the parts soon.

Well, the service manager was a reasonable guy. He made a half-hearted attempt to say that the parts had been stresed by the short already. But all I had to say was, 'yeah, but...fifty amps!!!'

Anyway, I suspected them of some foul play - as you said, 'something stinks.' But the tech explained it again and told me that the exposed wire was the radio dimmer. I know for a fact that I didn't hook that up to the aftermarket CD player. I'm also very certain that I capped that wire to prevent a short, but I guess this teaches me to be more careful.

Talking

I **** you not, here's the update.

The dealer hadn't called me back, as promised, to tell me how long it would take them to get the parts. So I called them. The service writer, who originally told me I'd have to pay for the parts they broke, answered and told me that the car would be ready by Thursday or Friday. I said 'fine' and left it at that. I was a little pissed that parts could be overnighted if I paid for them, but came by UPS ground if they had to, but whatever.

Then the service manager called me and said that the service writer didn't know what he was talking about. He said, 'I have good news for you - your car is done.'

The service manager was not entirely satisfied with the tech's explanation of how he broke what he did, so he asked him to go get the wiring diagrams. It turns out that the tech had read the diagram wrong and crossed lines somehow. They went out to the car and, sure enough, they had simply blown another fuse. And they hadn't checked when they found that previously working components no longer worked.

So the total charge is for an hour and a half of labor, plus the key we asked them to make (my wife wanted one with the black rubber on it, because I lost that one).

My coworker asks: 'Are they charging you for the fuse?'

Oh My Gawd!!!

That is bizarre almost to the point of being funny.

Glad your car is back.

Oh, it is funny. But people have asked me, 'so are you ever going back to that dealer again?'

And I just don't know. I mean, it all turned out fine in the end, but getting there sure was an ordeal. Hell, I haven't even used the dealer's name because I don't want to pass judgement on them yet.

Yep, that is funny!

Kinda like the tranny guy, when I walked in during one of my many visits to their shop just to see how things were going (you heard the sucking of buttholes every time I walked in -- you could tell they weren't used to visits, just calls. ). I was standing by the driver's front fender and asked them if they'd tried unplugging the dropping resister to see if it made any difference. I pointed to it, as I asked the question. The owner (who was standing by me) yelled to the tech, "Here's that dropping resister you was looking for." The tech said, "Well, California told me it was on the left side of the engine in front of the strut tower." I replied, "It is on the LEFT side of the engine . . . from the DRIVER'S perspective." Needless to say, I didn't return there for my latest Tranny work.

Well, it's good to hear you got some comic relief along with your repairs.
