Brakes, sightings, etc...

I just happen to have access to the internet this morning, so I thought I'd say hi and tell my story.

Amber and I visited Champaign this weekend to look for a place to live. Before you ask, we did. I think. We'll see - it's less of a lease and more of an informal arrangement at the moment. Weird.

Anyway, given the choice of Legacy or SVX, of course we took the SVX. On Sunday afternoon / evening, the front right started making a terrible noise during braking. I looked through the front right wheel and could see that the outside pad was worn down to the metal. Whoops.

Actually, I had all of the tools with me to do a pad change, save for a c-clamp and a proper jack. It was too late to call parts stores, especially on a Sunday night, so I called the dealer for their hours. Service opened at 7:30, so I just decided to go there first thing in the morning instead of trying to track down a set of aftermarket pads.

They were able to look at the car right away, and in about fifteen minutes the service writer came into the waiting room and told me what I expected to hear. He wanted to replace both rotors and the pads. Of course, the rotors were $150 apiece. Luckily, they didn't have any, but they wanted to machine my 136,000-mile, 10-year old rotors. Right. And have them warp on the way out the lot. Sure.

So I asked the guy to just replace the pads, telling him that I intend to buy some nice aftermarket rotors instead of stock ones, so I didn't want to pay the ridiculous $100 charge to machine the rotors. He didn't like the idea, did it anyway, and charged me $200 for a pad change. Argh. Yeah, they won my business.

On Monday afternoon we saw another SVX. It was, I believe, a '94-'96 Bordeaux Pearl. L or LS, FWD, escaine seats. It had a set of wheels on it that I really didn't care for, but the owner seemed to take good care of the car, so that's fine. I left a note on the windshield, so hopefully the owner joins up.

Oh, another funny thing that happened on Monday - some guy at a Panera Bread place thought my SVX was an NSX. Then he wasn't sure, so he asked me. He turned out to be the kid that gave me a free refill on my wife's green tea, even though he wasn't supposed to.

Okay, well, there you have it. I'm starting my new job around the 20th, so I'll be on with some regularity in a couple weeks. Chow.

Why do those things always go bad at the worse times? It looks like that job could have cost you 3X what it did if your luck had not payed off.

Good luck on the new job and I hope all continues to work out for you.
